Range, general shooting, SHTF, what ever may come up. I own a few AR,s just looking at adding a little more horsepower to the battery. No long range precision shooting. SOCOM is really made for less than 300 yards due to its sights. It has a really wide front sight and larger aperture rear. Scout Squad can still go out a ways as it has normal sights. If you are only going to have one I'd say the scout is the way to go. I have a 22" standard so I went with the SOCOM for my second. |

I have never owned a Socom, but I do have a Polytech with an LRB 18.5" barrel. I think it is a much more flexible system. It can fill the role of a Socom while still keeping some legs on it for distance. I think of it as my DMR type set up, particularly since I have it in a SAGE stock.
The Socom comes with a muzzle break and it will cost you a couple hundred to get a flash hider. Once you add a flash hider, it is only about 1" shorter than a 18.5" with the shorter Smith flash hider (which also cost you some added money). I also think the 18" length is about the perfect length on a .308 rifle. Short enough to keep the length to a minimum. Long enough to help tame the muzzle blast and keep the velocity up. Again, I don't think the Socom is a bad package. I have nearly bought one several times in the past and will eventually end up getting one. But I really like the 'Scout' length set up, which is better for me. |

I recommend the Scout 18.5" as it is the most versatile. Warning: Colecting the M14 Type rifle is highly addictive. One leads to two. Two leads to four. Four l... You get the point! |
