also, does it make a difference on what the costs are and how easy it is to acquire these materials?  what i mean is that i'm deciding between a couple different graphtec and roland units and i don't know whether to buy an 8" or 12" etc.  if stencil and masking type material can be found in any width then it won't matter, but i thought i'd try and find something that is close to "standard" if there is such a thing.

any suggestions or guidance?

thanks,

michael

I bought one about a year ago. It handles up to 30" stencils/vinyl.

I usually only cut 14" stencils, but it's nice to know I can cut bigger if I want.

The more important aspect is what kind of program you're going to get to use with your plotter. Get one with a security dongle.

I bought my plotter used for about $1000, and my program was a little more than that. The right program is PRICELESS! The wrong one and you might as well throw it (the plotter) away.

costs? Do you mean material costs? Yes, it makes a difference. What do you want to make with it?

Questions? I've got a decent supply company I deal with in Chicago. Everything is shipped. Let me know.

i didn't know if i picked a unit that handled 12" if said material was easy or hard to find in 12" widths.

also, i'm not in the know as far as what programs will do what and why.  if i can swipe image shapes and cut them to various sizes, i'll probably be ok.  again, i don't know shit about it though...

the three models that interest me currently are:

Graphtec Craft ROBO Pro - Professional Craft Cutter
Roland STIKA SV-12
Roland STIKA SV-8

the roland comes with "Roland CutStudio™ Software"

the graphtec with "Craft ROBO Pro System Requirements and Software Included Craft ROBO Pro includes a design program called ROBO Master Pro (Windows 2000/XP only) and Cutting Master 2 Plug-in for Adobe Illustrator 8 through CS3 & CorelDraw 10~X3 for Windows"

i know next to nothing about what either is capable of doing...

are those programs enough?  i don't know...

Most of th stuff I get is 14". Seems a lot of the commercial guys use that as their smallest stuff. I'd ask around.

Or, call a company in Chicago called Rayco. Their number is 800.421.2327

If you ask for a guy named Steve he can tell you what he has for used. Also ask for pricing on his supplies. Tell him you talked to Dan in Madison, WI.

One thing to think about is cutting blades. How much and how easy to get... Not sure about the prgrams you named off. Just make sure you can import stuff, make your own, and work with it via their programs.
