I played around with one of these in the gunshop today, and am thinking of picking one up.

What are the pros/cons of the various chamberings offered?
9mm, .357 sig, .40 sw

Next year they are going to offer it .45 ACP.  I had an HS2000 which is exaclty the same as an XD.  I cannot recommend a better bang for your buck.

Got my HS2000, one of the first in the country, for $219...  I love life and being in at the beginning of a rage :).

$219 huh? nice

They're going for around $400 now and still seem like a good buy.

My HS2000 has been perfect. It is a world class pistol and yet the price is still low as they try to build market share.

Check over in the Handgun section and you'll find lots of info on the XD.

Yup $219 plus a $20 transfer fee... so really $239.

I handled one of these and they are good to go.  I read some where that you can modify Beretta Mags to fit in there.

Hmmmm......

I just bought one yesterday while at the Gun Collectors show here in Houston.  Can't wait to go shoot the thing, it sure has a great feel.  I had sold my G22 as it was just a little big for my hand, but this feels perfect.  At $359, seemed like a bargain as well.  I'll post about my 1st shooting experience soon :-)

I have the 4" in .40S&W. I've had it since June, but only have put ~200 rds thru it so far, but I really like it, great for a first handgun.  Check out the discussion forums at www.xdtalk.com

Quite a few of the WebShooters bunch got to try all three calibers at the Springfield XD Challenge in SoCal last month. They supplied the pistols, PMC supplied the ammo, Mr. Twisted set the whole thing (including steel target stages) up--even a night match, using Insight illuminators.

I think the general consensus was that they're really a decent buy and easy to shoot. The 9mm XDs were probably the most common. I thought the ported .40 was just as easy to shoot. The .357 Sig version definitely had more bark to it (and jumped a bit more in the hand), but it was still pretty easy to get back on target fairly quickly.

FWIW, XD owners report that you can use the standard low-capacity (10-round) .40-caliber magazines in 9mm XDs with no modification. Even better, they insist that the .40-cal mags accept and reliably feed 14 or 15 rounds of 9mm!

Edited to add: On the original question of 9mm vs. .40 S&W vs. .357 Sig, it's your call. As has been pointed out to me, 9mm is the most common NATO pistol caliber so it's easy to find everywhere and is pretty cheap to shoot. It's also fairly accurate, recoil and report are light. Doesn't have as much reliable knock-down power on steel targets that .45s do.

The .40 S&W gives you a slightly bigger bullet. It seems to perform well but is also a bit more expensive when it comes to buying ammo.

The .357 Sig is a hot load. Good performer, from what I hear. Down side is that it's still on the rare side so ammo availability is lower and price is higher.

I also have one, in 9mm.  Your original question was about caliber;  I suggest it would depend on your use of the pistol.  I got mine for playing around and shooting.  Therefore, I got a 9mm so the ammo would be cheap (I shoot Wolf 9mm in it, no problems.)
If it were my only pistol and I would be using it for home defense, I would probably go with a .40.  But I have lots more and only use this one for fun.

I bought an XD-40 for shooting and home defense. Sweet pistol. Can hardly wait for the XD-45 to come out.

Any reason why this is tacked?

I have two HS2000s, one for shootin and one collection unit.

A few points:

More features than a Glock
Great reviews by almost all who try it
Beretta/Tarus/S&W magazines work for 9mm version
Mag mod takes about 15 minutes
Abundant supply of inexpensive HC mags($10-15)
Extremely durable
Great feel

Read the reviews. You pay more for the SA XD version but you get their name and lifetime support (I think). Grrrrrreeeaaaat gun, and I have several types to compare it to.

Oh, almost forgot, I don't think you have the flexibility with HC mags in the .40 or .45 versions.

I talked about this gun on Glock Talk about 3 weeks ago I think. I am also thinking of getting one in 40 cal. Than I hear it's also going to be in 45. Since I don't have the money I will wait. It is a very good gun and I think a little more accurate than the Glock out to 50ft and beyond. I hate to say that because I love my Glock.
There is also Green18 who just bought one in 9mm. I was suppose to try it at the last LI  shoot but I got busy and forgot. Go for it I think it has a better feel than some other guns out there. Listen also a CZ is a nice gun also.
Gun-Test gave the XD40 their best buy if I remember over the Glock and CZ.

Ok, I've got probably the STUPIDEST question to be asked about the HS2000/XD. I'm looking to pick one up in a few months (too much on the plate before XMAS), but I'm wondering....are they being imported still or is Springfield doing the production here? I know it's crazy, but I'm ranging to get one that says Made in Croatia on it. I'm kinda proud of my heritage, and it would just freak the whole family out to know (aside from my bro, every member of my family was born/raised in Croatia, where most of the family still resides) that I'm using a 'Croatian Sensation'.

I'd be getting it for a night stand gun. Sounds like most people would  go for the .40. Has anyone played around with the .357 sig round? I just read an article in one of the gun magazines about this and it sounds pretty impressive. The writer made it out to be basically a clone of the .357 magnum in a shorter package. I wonder if the funky shaped case would make the gun more or less reliable. How does recoil on the .357 sig compare to a .45?

They're cheaper than Glocks...and that's a Glock with an LEO discout!

I believe Sprigfield is only the importer... As to whether they still say Made In Croatia is beyond me.  I love my HS2000.

Yes they are still made in croatia, i believe it still says it on the side. And springfield is covering the warranty on the HS2000's to. I have a hs2000, glock 19 and CZ 75b. The hs2000 is my least favorite. But just because I think it's too small. I'm 6'1" with large hands. I prefer the grip size of my glock 21. I got the HS for my fiance and she likes it. I bought two spare highcaps the day I bought the gun. The taurus 92 highcap seemed to fit slightly better than the baretta. I'm not sold that .40's are all great. I love the .45, and 9mm is my second favorite. I keep the .45 on my nightstand, and an AK next to the bed.

Did you know that you can get WD-40 in a 1 Gallon jug?  Pretty cool.

As a side note, I've a XD-9.  Best cheap gun on the market.

Absolutely the best $430.00 I ever spent!  The other best part is that the $20.00 XD40 mags work in the 9mm gun and hold 15 rounds and are legal since you are not modifying them in any way!  Get some!

I'd get one in .45 ACP if they made it.
