Hey all... got a question as I have a strange occurrence with some reloads. I'm loading 9mm subsonic loads for playing around with an SiliencerCo Osprey. Since I actually found 2 pounds each of TiteGroup and CFE Pistol recently, I followed the data on Hodgdon's Website as a starting point. Using Hornady 147g FMJ-RN's, shooting out of a Glock35 with a Lone Wolf 9mm conversion barrel (I got it that way...) I have not, and will not, shoot thru the can until I get the loads dialed in as I don't want a baffle strike. So, basically, my issue is the first shot of each test load goes about 6-8 inches high at 25ft, shooting off a rest. Seems to be stable, as the hole is clean (I believe - testing again this week to verify). I loaded up 5 rounds of each powder, in the .1grain increments from low to high as shown on Hodgdon's site. I'd shoot the first round, chrony would catch it, but I did not initially see the hole until I walked foward as saw it in the black where I was not aiming. I'd go back, and the next 4 would be on target. So I'd write down the chrony data for the string, load the next 5 with .1 grain more, and fire the first round. Same thing - 6-8 inches high, with the next 4 being on target. This happened for each incremental load. And it happened again with the different powder - 1st round high, next 4 fine. Shoot the next incremental load and 1st high, 4 on target. repeated all thru the incremental loads and it was always the first round that was high. Loads were 1.10 OAL and very lightly crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp.I know they were all done the same as I inspected each after loading like I always do with a new load workup. FPS were all consistent, SD and ES were all good... not sure what is going on as I've not seen this before. Temp was about 28°f, no wind. I do not remember this happening with any commercial ammo, but I have not tried commercial sub loads. I'm going to try and get some and see, as well as taking other 9mm ammo with me next time as well as better targets to see impacts better. But I've put maybe 500-750 rounds thru this gun and not noticed this issue before. Looking for any ideas on what to look for and check further. I plan to take a couple of different magazines with me, commercial ammo, as well as some more loaded ammo. I have the load I want based on FPS and consistency, but that remains to be seen depending on this issue. Any ideas? |
| Here's a test that may help you eliminate the flyers. The first round that you chamber from the magazine fire into the bank. Then test your groups with the rounds cycled by the action of the gun. If the first high shot goes away using this method we can drill down further. |
