[ARCHIVED THREAD] - threading a 1911 barrel

I want to make my own comp for a std 1911 barrel (not bull), would a std 9/16 die leave enough barrel material to prevent a banana pel at the muzzle?? I don't have a lathe so can't cut .578x28 or .575x40 and don't want to spend the $100 for a specialty tap and die. This is just a project to fill some time this winter... But I also don't want to destroy a barrel and possibly the frame and maybe my hand as well...

If you are going to try the use a threading die by hand, you will destroy the barrel.

This is a job that needs a lathe to be done correctly. You will save time, money, and damage to you and your pistol by paying a gunsmith to do the job.
