i purchased a nfa item in GA and it had to transfer 10minutes across the river to SC so i could finish the process of buying it. How long should that take?  They told me 15 days orginally but when i called them back all i got was the gov't takes forever to do anything answer.  I just need to start my form 4 from the place in SC but i have no way of contacting the guy it transfered to just the shop i bought it from.  Its been right at about a 1.5mo

if you bought the NFA item from a class 3 dealer in  SC, then the transfer from him to your Ga. class 3 dealer  has been  running anywhere  from 2-8 weeks(dealer to dealer, tax free transfer on a form 3) it really should even take a couple weeks, all they have to do is just change the registery there is no background check etc... from SOT to SOT, .  however, the transfer from your class 3 dealer to you on a form 4, that could take anywhere from 3-5 months

I will give the answer that the NFA branch will give him,  "it's pending".

I don't know what you envision how big the NFA branch is, but it's small, like a dozen folks, if that. and of all those people there is only 1 maybe 2 people that just do dealer to dealer transfers

a friend of mine who happens to be a class 3 dealer, and at one time  it took 4 months for a dealer to dealer transfer. go figure

you're going to have to be patient,  then you're going to have to be extra patient when you do the form 4 from your dealer to you.  the holidays are just around the corner, and it's going to get really slow there. you might get it sometime in jan-feb 2011

I'm confused.  If I understand, you live in SC and you found an item at a sot in GA.  You gave the GA dealer money to pay for the item with the understanding that he would form 3 it to your sot in SC.  This is the confusing part.  You don't have contact information for the SC sot??  Does the SC sot even know that an item is being transfered to him?  That's weird, cause most people find a sot in their state and coordinates with them to do the transfer before makeing the purchase.

Notwithstanding my confusion. The dealer in GA has an address for the dealer in SC or he could not have done the form 3.  ATF will not tell you anything because you are not a party to the form 3 transaction.  If a dealer told you it was going to take 15 days he hasn't done a transfer lately.  In his defense it can take any were from 3 to 12 weeks and no one really knows how long it will take.  My last 3/4 transfer was 8 months total and was approved in July.

Here is what I would do.  Go to the dealer you bought the item from and ask for a copy of the form 3.  For all you know he has not even sent it to martinsburg yet.  Make contact with the sot in SC and make sure that he is willing to do the transfer for you.  When your SC sot gets the item and does the from 4 to you, make sure he checks the box that allows you to call the ATF and get the status of the transfer.  Get a copy of the form 4 with the serial number.  Mail the form 4 yourself with a personal check.  Check you account after 10 day and make sure they cashed you check.  Then wait 60 days and call and find out if it's pending (assigned to an examiner)  At 90 days call again.  Be patient.

Tell me if I assumed to much.

yeah i live right on the sc/ga border.  They shop i bought from is the only local shop around to keep me from having to drive a couple hours north.  But they use an sot in SC that is just an individual they said he is who does all of their ga/sc transfers.  So i gave them my phone number and they said they would call me after its transfered (fair enough) so i could meet with him to start the form 4.  But like i said earlier they told me 15 days so i was just starting to wonder what was up.  I dont have any problem waiting and probably wont call till they call me now that i know it can take longer, i just figured it wouldnt take long for sot-sot figured that had an express lane at the office.  This is the first NFA item bought, next time ill probably try to buy from a stocking dealer on my side of the river...  Thanks for the help

Bone84,

I would still make contact with the SC sot.  I assume you have paid for the item in question.  The SC sot is going to be sitting on your stuff for 4 months.  You should really know who is going to be holding your paid-in-full item, and you should have a good feeling about his still being in business next year. You need to have a lot of trust in this person and trust takes time to build.  I wasted 6 months on my first item and finally had to cancel the purchase and go to someone else who really wanted to be a sot.

Keep in mind that the originating dealer already has your money.  His biggest motivation to make this happen is gone.  It's up to you to keep him motivated.

Don't take this wrong, you may have the most honest dealer in the south, with great intentions, and I don't know them from Adam, but don't be afraid to follow up until you know that the paperwork is in Martinsburg.

Just sayin!

yeah ill do that then, they just gave me the guys name, i really dont have any way to contact him unless i can get dealer to give me his number.  I think its just one of his buddies or something.  All i know is he is a state trooper so im guessing he is reliable.

I really need to start my own business around here dealing in class 3 stuff

OK, be proactive.  Don't wait round for people to contact you.  They may not have YOUR contact info.  Good luck with your purchase.  In the end you will be happy, it will have been worth the wait, and you will want to do it again.

It sucks because you live so close to the border, but that has nothing to do with it. I've had forms take 1 day to 4 months for SOT to SOT transfers. Just luck of the draw.
