i have a springfield bush rifle that i set into a JAE 100 stock with a Smith Ent scope mount and a nikon monarch 2.5-10. with south african ammo and friend and i were only getting about 3 or 4 inch groups at 100 yards. with austrailian surplus it tightened up to about 2 to 3 MOA.  is that typical of the barrel or just the best you can get with surplus ammo?

are the springfield barrels capable of better accuracy with federal gold match ammo?

Like I said, you may find some kind of surplus your barrel likes.  Typically speaking though, it's not the highest quality.  I've never tried the load you refer to but would like to sometime.

Try American Eagle 150 fmj's.  I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg for a box.

It is very easy to improve the already good accuracy on M1As.
Here are two groups from my M1As, both preban. One is a standard that has been worked over some, the other is a NM.
Here are 10 shot groups from both of them shot with NM aperture rear iron sight.

The neat thing about an accurate M1A  - it will shoot consistently even when hot and dirty.

i went out shooting todya with the privi partizan match ammo and got much better results. they tightened up to under 2 inches at 100yrds. so for half the price of federal gold match, that will work for me.

thanks for all your advice and input.

here is the rifle,
