For some reason I've been really wanting a 30/30 have no idea why. Don't know anything about them but the bare basics. Which ones are the better ones. Price no more than 500.  looked at a couple used winchesters for 375 today at local gun shop.

Can't beat the Marlin 336 series for the price.  336 C w/ Marshield finish is great for a camp/brush gun that is going to get beat up.  Personally, I'd spend a bit more and get the 336 SS.  Shoots the same but looks really nice.  Either way, I've bought a few and they are really nice lever actions, very accurate too.

I like the side eject of the Marlin over the Winchester. With fall hunting seasons approaching youll see alot of retailers with sales on the 336. Ive always wanted to cut mine down to 16.5". They came out with a limited edition trapper, stainless 16.5", which is nice but alittle pricey. Their new 336BL is nice with a 18.5" barrel, laminated stock, and big loop lever for around $500. If I had $500 to spend I'd be looking hard at that one. Its still a 6shot too. Is you cut one down to 16.5 you loose a round. I noticed the forearm retainer does not wrap over the barrel. Im wondering if that will help with accuracy at all. Not that the 30-30 is a tack driver anyway. Its a good all multi purpose round.

Theres a $35 rebate on select 336s too (not the BL) till the end of the year.

You can find used 336's around $200 if you look hard enough. Pawn shops always seem to have one around. Do an advance search on gunbroker.com  and search by your state. Ive found many good deals by paying cash in person.

I'm with the others: Marlin 336 or go home. Built like a tank and very fun to shoot.

Had a Win 94 in 30/30 for a few years.  For the life of me I don't understand what's so great about them.  Accuracy was pretty poor, recoil surprisingly stout, trigger was marginal and the sights were nothing special.  It was light and handy.

A nice used Winchester for under $400 would be a good score, IMO.

Winchester 94s and Marlin 336s are both good to go

You should have no problem finding a decent used one for less than $400

the Marlin 336 is a stronger design and lends itself better to mounting a scope it you plan on scoping one

here's my 336W

now to find a good peep sight for it

Following manufactuers market a lever action 30 WCF.

Marlin 336 <$500
Mossberg 464 <$500
Henry Big Bore >$500
Winchester 94>$500

Used gun rack
millions of Winchester 94s and Marlins.  Mossberg had a 30-30 that look like the Marlin 336 before (current one looks like the Winchester), Savage 99 and a few others.  Go with what feels good to you and handles well.

Marlin 30AS is also a way to save money with a hardwood stock.

I have an old Sears Ted Williams 30-30 Bought it for $150.00 a bunch of years ago. First time out first shot took the x out at 100yds. Have not been able to do that again. Winchester made these for sears.  Nice gun dose kick alittle. I just put a williams peepsight on it. Have not had a chance to go shoot it. Soon

Nearly every pawn shop has a good used Marlin 30-30 or two.

While for a new marlin that is a decent deal, I would recommend going used from a pawn shop. Around here most pawn shops have used marlins and winchesters on the rack for $200 or so on up. Get a reciever peep site for it, put on a sling and buttcuff to hold rounds and be done with it.

While I agree the marlin is superior in strength, accuracy, in almost any way you can measure over the M94, I still prefer the winchester. Not sure why

I love my Marlin 336C, I shoot it more often than I do my AR, it's just such a fun rifle. Trigger is anything but great but it's not supposed to be and they have nice aftermarket triggers. I have XS sights and just got an extended eye relief scope and scout mount for it to have even more fun. Look around and you can find 336's at good prices.
