Anyone make qd mounts other than yhm and the discontinued pws? I've seen the knock offs on ebay but I'm leery of them. Also which of the 2 brakes yhm offers is better to run on SBR?

In all the searching I've done, I haven't come across a genuine manufacturer of YHM mounts besides the YHM and the discontinued PWS. YHM does offer 2 brakes but I'm pretty sure they are caliber exclusive. If you order a 5.56 brake you get one style, if you order the .30 cal version you get the other. I have one of each and I prefer the 5.56 style. On my 308 SBR, the brake directs a lot of the blast back towards the shooter due to the angle of the ports. I can also feel my hand getting peppered with unburnt powder and. My girlfriend doesn't lIke to shoot it so I found an SSS brake shield to use when not shooting suppressed.

On the other hand, the 5.56 brake looks odd but performs well and keeps the blast to the side rather than rearward. While it is significantly louder than a flash hider, it's not any more concussive to the shooter. Accompanying shooters may be bothered by it if shooting in close proximity or indoors but that's the price of a good brake.

Neither the 5.56 or .30 cal models come with "acceptable" shims. The wrench flats on the qd mounts are 3/4" dia and I'm betting the shims are closer to or greater than 7/8" dia. This presents a problem if using a standard wrench or armorers wrench as the wrench flats are entirely too thin and the shims prevent using a standard wrench. Tapco makes a this profile OD green AR wrench that may work. Problem is, there isn't much room for grasping it so it's hard to get decent leverage to achieve the proper amount of torque needed to index the brake. The solution I've found that works best is ordering a shim kit from Gemtech. The shims are 3/4" dia and it comes with a much greater variety of shims, making the brake timing significantly easier, especially when you can use a crows foot wrench attached to a torque wrench.

YHM really offers three:
1. 7.62 brake (long version)
2. LT brake (same length as 5.56, but with a .30 bore)
3. 5.56 brake (short version)

The 7.62 is 5/8-24...the 5.56 is 1/2-28...but the LT comes in a couple different thread pitches (1/2-28, 1/2-36, 5/8-24).

They do also make a .338 brake, but probably not one people are looking for.

Are they both equally as easy on the blast baffle?

Without doing any extensive testing, who knows. I doubt anybody has tried to figure out. Some people don't even think brakes help any more than a flash hider. I am definitely not subscribed to that train of thought. Anything less than 16" and I'll put a brake on it.

Edit: both mounts have dual chambers and pretty stout perpendicular baffles so they should both do a good job.

I haven't bought any mounts in awhile and now they have a new line of cans.. The LT and LTA, I assume they are compatible with the old ones?

They're 5.56 length with 7.62 bore. The LT/LTA/ULT and the full size .30 cans all fit. I don't have a 5.56 can to test, but I'd hope it doesn't fit.

The Saker with the Y-mount also fits.
