I have not jumped in whole hog as yet but am trying to get the final touches done to my 'POOR BOY' set of guns.  Next on the list will be the compensator for my Rifle and I am planning to go with the Miculek version.  It is extremely low priced and yet always seems to make it into everyone's short list of favourites.  I would like for someone knowledgeable to  give me a crash course in what to expect and or need for getting this done.  Sure I am going to get it installed by a local gunsmith BUT all to often I am not sure of these guys bonafideez so what to expect when I walk in with the comp in one hand and the gun in the other?.  The barrel is from a Bushmaster Predator and is not threaded.  I assume this will need to be dressed to tolerance and threaded first but is the comp just a simple screw on or does it require any actual machine work to assure its alignment with the bore?  I have read where some other comps need to be trued to the bore.  I have seen dies listed for threading muzzles to accept accessories but would think this is a lathe job, no?

Send the barrel and comp to ADCO Firearms. They are the best in the business. Great service.

Yes, it's a lathe job. You should ask if they are going to cut threads true to the bore or just on the outside of the barrel. Either way, it should be close enough for a comp. The comp will just screw on after that. Suppressors need threads that are true to the bore, however.

Consider simply selling the unthreaded barrel (or the entire upper) to someone who wants one, then buy yourself a threaded barrel/upper. Gunsmithing services can get expensive and are completely unnecessary for the vast majority of AR15 upgrades.

ADCO is set up to turn a barrel pretty quickly. If you remove the barrel from the upper it makes it much easier, faster and cheaper to do. I would not be surprised if ADCO has a lathe with collet/chuck and live center always set up to turn and thread barrels .

Thanks for the information.  Best I can tell it might still be awhile before I can find much in the way of acceptable guns to consider as a backup and at an affordable price.  Who is Adco?

Seriously? It's like talking to my in-laws. No one listens. I even linked you directly to the barrel threading services of ADCO in my original response. Much like my in-laws, you are dead to me now.

I'd get a barrel that's already threaded and sell the other one.

I actually like my Bushmaster and think that perhaps a second gun would be more in order.  Carbonfly, this is all yore fault!!  Why in the world would you think that an old guy would recognize a link, I just thought you were being artistic by using red?  OH WELL the wife said I am dead to her for the same reason, I never listen!  http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/anim_uzi.gif   Bob   http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/anim_heavy.gif

Appears I do not know how to use features either!!!  Perhaps I should take my teeth back out and go back to bed.
