All other factors aside, of the common 3 gun SG's which would be the most reliable in terms of running w/o hiccups.

And nobody reply rem 870 either. Semi auto

I recently switched to the new Remington Versa Max. It's light in the hand, shoots soft and hasn't missed a beat once I chamfered the right side of the chamber (Benellis have the same problem). The downside is that it is a new platform, so nobody can be sure what will break and when, and accessories are limited. Oh, and Remington are not selling parts to the common folk yet .

If you are OK with a bit more kick and aren't planning to hang anything off it, a Benelli M2 is a good and well proven alternative, with lots of parts availability. Benelli is the safe choice for the unimaginative.

Both guns require a similar level of modification to get up to snuff.

Nice setup!  Have you done anything with the Benelli besides the mag extension?  Is that a Nordic extension?  Anything you're planning on adding in the future?

I'm looking to buy an M2 before the 2012 season starts, so I'm trying to figure out what the "must haves" are.

For the M2, the basics are a welded up lifter, a larger FO front sight and an extension tube. I also added a slightly larger charging handle, a Nordic follower and a bigger bolt release. I put a dot on the rear of the rib to act as an aiming point for slugs (mine shoots high and left). I also opened up the loading port some. I find the edges are a little sharp from the factory. I got my 21" new - it had a couple miss feeds in the first 100 rounds. The extractor relief cut on the barrel can get very sharp. It can actually grab shells with a less than desired crimp as the lifter takes them into the chamber. I rounded the edge off a little and switched to some higher quality shells and no more feeding issues after about 300 shells. The extractor will re-sharpen the area so you do have to go back and work on it ever so often. I'd post pics of mine, but the photo server I use is down.

Benelli M1 or M2.  I've hardcore drunk the Italian kool-aid though.  I will say this.  If I didn't have the Benellis that I do, I'd run the new Versa-Max for its price and ease of modification.
