Here is your ammo!

As many of you know, we have been tossing around the idea of forming a competitive force.  I took the liberty of doing some homework on it and this is what I have come up with.  Let me begin by saying, some of this is my opinion, so please take it as that.  If anyone in the group has more experience with competitive gaming, please feel free to slap me in the face.  Be aware, I may remove your jaw from your face in return, but at least we will have mutual respect.  Meaning, all opinions/questions/comments are welcome, as this is an open forum.

If you want to respond to a particular part of this post, please don't quote the whole thing.  Break the section out that you want to quote first.  Makes your comment easier to understand.

Cool?  Ok.

First things first:
Go here and create an MLG account.  Your choice if you want to pay for the different account levels or not.  Please complete your profile as best you can.
http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/

Link direct to the BF3 arena page:
http://gamebattles.majorleaguegaming.com/xbox360/battlefield-3/

DO NOT take this post as the final word on anything regarding MLG.  They change up processes and policies all the time.  Definitely be diligent and stay up by visiting the website often.

Spend some time browsing this site and getting comfortable with it.  There is a crap ton of information here that has taken me the better part of a week to get through.  The more you know the better off you will be.  You will be given a support ID number.  This is important to keep handy for obvious reasons, mainly, if there is a dispute regarding a match that you submit a ticket for, it will likely be used.

Link your XboxLIVE account to your MLG account.  There are stipulations for those who are running multiple gamertags.  I don't think any of us are, but who knows.  This can be done in the profile settings, and as always, make sure you understand the policy in full!

Competitive play:
The MLG BF3 arena is organized into Leagues or Ladders.  We will be competing in the Ladders category, as no official Leagues for BF3 have been organized yet.

From MLG:
Unfortunately, due to limitations within the game, Squad Rush is the only Battlefield 3 game mode that can be supported by GameBattles. Battlefield 3 does not offer the creation of private matches for any other modes. This has forced us to make some adjustments to Battlefield 3 Arena rules:
1.The game mode will be Squad Rush only.
2.All matches will be played 4vs4.

I read somewhere that there are some informal challenges that get posted for Conquest games.  I honestly can't remember if it was on MLG or not (as there are other competition gaming sites besides MLG), but I know several would be highly interested in this, and I think we could be a formidable team on some maps.  Just know that there is no special server that these run on or anything that might reduce team size (so far as I know).  I have yet to review the MLG forums to learn more.  Those interested in this type of competition should dig it up and take the lead on informing the rest of us.  As we all know, filling a 12 person team for a single game could be a major challenge.

Edit:  Just after I posted this, I found this thread for ARFCOM Team America:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_119/1257960_New_BF3_Hardcore_Server___Team_America___Update_in_OP_.html
Those interested in Conquest games should definitely go here.  As far as I know, however, Team Speak cannot be used for MLG play as they have a policy on 3rd party chatting.  Nice work on the website, guys.  Looks like something I could get into.

Rules - read them, know them inside and out.  In my days playing competitve ultimate frisbee (a sport where the rules can be obscure), some of the winningest teams were hated by many because they assumed their in-game calls were cheap...  when actually, after I got to play with them, they just knew the rules better than anybody else.  Knowing the rules will win you games.  No doubt about it.  Read and study them here:
http://gamebattles.majorleaguegaming.com/xbox360/battlefield-3/ladder/team/rules

Some general housekeeping:
1. We will need to create a team.  I am happy to take on that responsibility in the coming days.  We can actually begin competing immediately, and potentially qualify for playoffs in March.  I recommend, however, that we focus on the spring season (which begins March 31st @ 9pm EST, same time winter season ends) and only scrimmage other teams informally until then.  See special notes about team creation below.  There are a few things to consider as a group.

2.  Everyone should use the [AR15] clan tag.  This can be done on Battlelog in your profile settings.  There is also a 'team tag' which could easily be the same thing.

3.   Practices - obviously, we need them.  Believe me when I say this, we will get our asses handed to us at first.  The only way to get around that is to play as often as possible.  I am definitely down for weekly practices or scrimmages with other teams (known as 'scrims').  I do believe though, that most of these teams are playing daily!  Obviously, if you are interested in competitive play, a commitment is required.  There are cash prizes involved, which if we win, we will need to decide how to handle (benefit ARFCOM and maybe they will sponsor us?).  Weekly practices sessions should probably be prefaced with a brief party meeting for the purpose of housecleaning.  I would challenge everyone to make your weaknesses your strengths, as I have mentioned before.

4.  Challenge accepting - As far as I can tell, challenges get posted on MLG during the season by the various teams.  It is up to us to accept them and play the then scheduled match.  There is some reporting required as you will have figured out by reading the rules.  I make the assumption that team captains will be responsible for that.  Match results are tracked by MLG separate from your Battlelog stats.  So rest assured that your Battlelog stats have nothing to do with this.  Case in point, my K/D is shit, but only because it took me a very long time to learn the in's-and-out's of the game, and most importantly, develop decent gun skills.

5.  ARFCOM Leaderboard - Forum member LA_357SIG was kind enough to create a stat tracker for all ARFCOM BF3 players regardless of platform.  Please go here and add yourself if you have not already (let him or myself know if you need help):
http://bf3stats.com/leaderboard/Na1g1ed5JP
Password:  arfcom

Team Creation:
I need to read up on actually building the roster to see if anything is required by individuals, or if the team founder is responsible for that.  After a certain date, the roster is locked (a note to be noted).  Rosters have a 24 player max.  There is no requirement to fill all of that.  The obvious requirement is that we be able to fill a 4vs4 game.

Here is an itemized list of what is required:

1.  Team Name - 22 characters max
2.  Team Tag - 5 characters max
3.  Team URL - this is pregenerated for us, it will look something similar to this - ../xbox360/battlefield-3/arfcom(or whatever we put).  I'm sure no one cares about this.

Nice to haves are:
4.  Team Avatar - 64x64 - I'm thinking we incorporate the ARFCOM logo into an Xbox controller somehow (or vice versa).  Not sure if we need permission to do that from the forum.  If anyone knows any graphic artists, get on the line with them about this.  It won't take much work, but will help make us look more organized.
5.  Team Logo - Something similar to the Avatar.  T-shirts?  Hats?  Special Xbox controller gloves?  j/k
6.  Team website - Umm, www.ar15.com?  Obviously, we don't really need this.
7.  Team Blast - 255 chars max - My suggestion is keep it simple:  "Be Nice.  We own real guns."
8.  Sponsored by - www.ar15.com - Do we need permission to claim that since we are all forum members (some paid, some not)?

Suggestions for Team Names/Tags:

AR15 Super Squad - In the Marine Reserves, we had a yearly thing called "Super Squad."  It was an infantry field competition that started at the company level, and graduated through to the divisional level, eventually leading to a face off with our active duty counterparts.  It was a lot of fun (not to mention hard work).  Given the game is USMC focused, my suggestion is that we call ourselves the AR15 Super Squad.  Team Tag:  AR15 (same as our clan tag)

A final note about recruitment - There is an option to check if we are looking to recruit players.  I have no idea what the ripple effect of that is, but if we want to recruit players, we should probably decide if we are going to recruit from our forum members, or if we are going to try and generate new traffic to the forum...  make sense?  It can obviously be both.  Asking someone to come check out ARFCOM is a little bit like asking them to join a culture, if one could call it that.  But I have come across the rare gamer/gun-owner who hasn't actually heard of ARFCOM.  I know there are a handful of Xbox-ers on the leaderboard who don't regularly play with the normal crew, but are definite leaders on the leaderboard.  I would advise we get them involved.

Please post your suggestions if you do/don't like what I have recommended here.  Again, if you quote the post, don't quote the whole thing!  Only the part you are responding to.  I hope this is helpful, and a good start.  Just remember, the goal is to have fun.  In the end, these are just games.  The fun part for me though, is winning.  That translates to:  in the name of good sportsman-like conduct, going all allah-hu jihad on the vaginas of our enemies.

Grenade out!

Ahh, it was there originally.  You must have skimmed over it.  Your link is the same though.  I made the rules paragraph header a bigger font so folks don't miss it again.

I couldn't resist.

Team "AR15 Super Squad" has been created on MLG.

Team ID:
14301662
Founded:
Feb 24, 2012 by SaloSV

Structure:

Leader - can be any team member who is highly web savvy and competent.  Can perform any and all team management tasks, including editing the profile, changing the roster, and posting/accepting match challenges.
Captain - can report/post/accept match challenges.
Member - General killer of the enemy.

We are currently enrolled in the Winter 2012 season, but like I said before, the playoffs are fast upon us.  Roster lock for the playoffs is March 1st.  So I stick to my recommendation of focusing on the Spring 2012 season, which begins March 31st.

A side note, I had some trouble looking up NSmokinFlakesY and NightfalconOO7 on MLG, preventing me from adding you to the roster.  I actually get an error when trying to view the profile of NightfalconOO7.  Can you guys make sure you are in an eligible status for GameBattles?  I'm wondering if there was an issue linking your GamerTags to your MLG profiles.  More homework to do.

Also, as you create your MLG accounts, please send me a friend invite on MLG.  Should make it easier to find you to add you to the roster.  MLG username: SaloSV

Edit:  Found SmokinFlakes, no more issue with you.  Falcon, make sure you have checked your email for an activation message.  I still can't view your profile.  I can find you in a member search, but can't view your profile.

Whatever you did worked.  No need to register as a Free Agent unless you want to play with random teams.  Up to you, although, I am not sure if that affects your status as a AR15 team member or not.  I sent you a friend request, when you accept I will add you to the roster.

Thanks.

I'll make it official:  anyone who chooses to bow out is more than welcome to help us fill games for scrimmages.  Once we get around to schedule regular scrims, we may need help filling a game.

The team invite process we've been using has worked well.

On MLG:

1.  Send me a friend request.  MLGid is SaloSV - just like my gamertag and arfcom id.
2.  Make sure you have associate your XboxLIVE gamertag with your MLGid.  You can do that in your profile settings on MLG.  You won't be able to compete unless that is done.
3.  I will accept your friend request and then send you a team invite.

Should be fairly simple.

At this point, Loki is the only pending invite out there.  Check your MLG inbox brother.

Current AR15 Super Squad roster:

SaloSV - SaloSV - founder/leader
ExO_EPIC - PapaKapture - member
NightfalconOO7 - Nightfalcon007 - member
NSmokinFlakesY - NSmokinFlakesY - member
Jager7Actual - Jager 7 Actual - member

Pending invites:
LokiThe12B

We will need some volunteers to be team leads.  If I am unavailable for a match, someone else will need to be able to post/accept/report the match.  Post up if you are willing.

I'm going to change back into my pajamas and blow some shit up.

If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles.

Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.

The opportunity to secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

“If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.”

The general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

You have to believe in yourself.

All war is based on deception.

Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate.

Confront them with annihilation, and they will then survive; plunge them into a deadly situation, and they will then live. When people fall into danger, they are then able to strive for victory.
Sun Tzu
~~~~~~~~~~
16. Hence the saying: The enlightened ruler lays his plans well ahead; the good general cultivates his resources.
17. Move not unless you see an advantage; use not your troops unless there is something to be gained; fight not unless the position is critical.
18. No ruler should put troops into the field merely to gratify his own spleen; no general should fight a battle simply out of pique.
19. If it is to your advantage, make a forward move; if not, stay where you are.
20. Anger may in time change to gladness; vexation may be succeeded by content.
21. But a kingdom that has once been destroyed can never come again into being; nor can the dead ever be brought back to life.
22. Hence the enlightened ruler is heedful, and the good general full of caution. This is the way to keep a country at peace and an army intact. Sun Tzu The Art of War Chapter 12 Paragraphs 16-22
-Think about these, and realize that they can be applied to BF3.
A very important lesson I learned back when Halo 2 came out is that your #1 enemy in the video game world is intelligence; actual external threats are second in nature (I mean the bullets and bombs).
All, I think it's about time to start practicing.  I've gotten a couple of verbal requests during daytime gameplay for challenges.  Mostly, advice to simply "play as many as GB's as you can, to get a feel for it."  I promptly come up with a reason why we can't man the challenge at that hour.
Regardless, some things noted were:
This video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MEhv_FqLLM
Watch it, more than once.  These are the top two teams in BF3 rankings right now.  Two of these players (maybe more) are in the top 10 of the MLG rankings for BF3 play.  I recommend watching as many videos of the PwnY team as you can.  All of us have been playing long enough to get the pace.  Quick, precise, not the least of which is ballz to the fucking wall.
Comm standards:
As a team, I propose that we schedule some practices, all 8 to be manned by AR15 clan members, preferably all Super Squad (SS) team members if possible (just so we don't have to repeat ourselves).  The purpose of these "all platoon" Squad Rush games will be to:
1.  Establish comm standards
2.  Map exploration
After we take a few minutes together to accomplish those training tasks, we can then return to our respective spawn areas, break out into separate parties, and begin the scrim.
A few basic rules for comm:
1.  Keep the comm channel clear - no expletives, complaining, rants about cheating or how you thought you should have won that last gun battle.  I word spoken must be to communicate either status or location of the enemy along with how many.  Exampled in the video above, you won't hear much other than that.
2.  Call outs - location descriptions, enemy locations and status, etc.  Most importantly, ENEMY SQUAD ELIMINATED!  If you get this message, call out "squad down" or something brief to the effect that it lets everyone know that the enemy is all dead.  This will give the team a quick que as to make a move on an objective, or push out for an aggressive defense.
No MAV's
No mortars
No frag rounds
Spawn traps are LEGAL.
Ya'll know me, I'm good pretty much any night at the moment.
Some of you have families, so I say we work around that schedule a bit.  Let's have everyone chime in with a preferred day and we will do our best.  Twice a week?  Once a week?
We will need help from everyone, and welcome input during practice from non-MLG participants.  Non-MLG'ers, please understand that these sessions are practices for the SS team, and should be respected as such.
SaloSV, out.
1.  Keep the comm channel clear - no expletives, complaining, rants about cheating or how you thought you should have won that last gun battle.  I word spoken must be to communicate either status or location of the enemy along with how many.  Exampled in the video above, you won't hear much other than that.
2.  Call outs - location descriptions, enemy locations and status, etc.  Most importantly, ENEMY SQUAD ELIMINATED!  If you get this message, call out "squad down" or something brief to the effect that it lets everyone know that the enemy is all dead.  This will give the team a quick que as to make a move on an objective, or push out for an aggressive defense.
No MAV's
No mortars
No frag rounds
Spawn traps are LEGAL.
Ya'll know me, I'm good pretty much any night at the moment.
Some of you have families, so I say we work around that schedule a bit.  Let's have everyone chime in with a preferred day and we will do our best.  Twice a week?  Once a week?
We will need help from everyone, and welcome input during practice from non-MLG participants.  Non-MLG'ers, please understand that these sessions are practices for the SS team, and should be respected as such.
SaloSV, out.
Those guys are good.
I am down for practice whenever it is scheduled.
Preferably after 5 any day is good. (weekday)
Weekend whenever.
Good stuff...
My weekday nights can be a little sporadic.  If I can get on Its from 8-10 EST.  On the weekends I am usually good for at least a Friday or Saturday night marathon starting around 8 and going till 12 or 1AM.
Totally fell asleep after the games last night.
First official practice begins tonight at 7pm CST/8pm EST.
Future practices will be continuously scheduled as follows:
Saturday @ 7pm Central/8pm Eastern
Wednesday same time.
Arfcom gamers who are not MLGers are welcome to join us to help fill the slots with trusted individuals.  I'd also like to make the suggestion that practices have at least two or three sessions in normal core mode.
Moan and groan all you want.  It is a necessity.
Yeah I noticed from the Vids that they were in normal mode... A little disconcerting.  But such is life!  Guess I will have to follow Foing into more of those normal servers for practice
First practice went well, and thanks to those who participated.  We came up with a few good ideas and were then able to put them to work.  We actually ended up having more than we could keep in a party!  So I am especially appreciative of the attention and enthusiasm everyone is giving this.
Need to set some ground rules though.  If you cannot abide by these rules during practice, please do not attend.
During map walkthroughs:
1.  One person speaks at a time.  Comm channels must remain clear, otherwise, this turns into a cluster fuck.
2.  No one fires their weapon unless to bring everyone's attention to a particular location they are currently speaking of.
3.  Please do not get bored.
4.  Please do not kill anyone, unless it is necessary as part of the current discussion.
MLG/BG rules are the order of the day.
No MAV's
No Mortars
No Frag rounds.
Structuring the team:
It was discussed later on in the evening about designating individuals into primary/secondary squads.  This is based on a combination of dedication, interest, skill, and availability.  With that said:
Alpha squad:
This list is our core roster for AR15 Super Squad.  Those on this list should play together at every opportunity.  The mission is to win GB's and scrim other ranked teams/players as often as they will accept, together, as a unit.
SaloSV
PapaKapture
NightFalcon007
NSmokinFlakesY
Jeager7actual
Bravo squad:
This is our backup team.  Some aren't interested in playing GB's, some are scared of it.  That's fine.  Support us during practices, or if members of Alpha are playing public games, join them.  Those interested in playing GB's would be allowed to fill in for core members in the event that a member of Alpha cannot attend a scheduled game, or is not online for an impromptu challenge (which does happen, btw).
Rothroq
Lokithe12B
Stryker428
Doomman
Dredic
A few others whom I haven't had much opportunity to talk about this team with, but who might be interested in filling the roster:
StainlessTEX
slowmethinks
BradC34
If you guys are interested, post up in this thread.
Thanks again for a successful first team practice.  In the future, once we've covered all the maps for the purpose of walkthroughs, I might develop a scenario based strategy agenda for practices.  For example, dealing with spawn traps (were we stage spawn traps) or mini-map training (where you play the whole game using mini-map only).  Everyone be thinking about training concepts and post up ideas here.
SaloSV out.
That was good training, also, if possible, IGN has overlay maps of all the SQRUSH games, might be useful to study and plan routes of attack
I had a great time in practice.  I think there was a TON of good info brought up.  I agree that there was a little TOO much going on with the C4 and Claymores, But I didn't mind the revive points; although a bit distracting.  I agree we need to have the one "teacher" at a time.  I got lost a couple times when we were moving around trying to show different spots.  That's why I tried to do a full walk through at one point.  Going from Point A to Point B going through the call outs/nomenclature seemed to solidify the different ideas brought up.  Then again it was very time consuming.  I think we should limit practice to ONE major walk through going over both points of Off/Deff per practice.
Another point I would like to see... Papakapture; our resident killing machine needs to pass on some wisdom.  I've seen him use a few different setups/classes and is just scary deadly, maybe its just twitch reaction that would rival a super human.  But if there is anything that can be learned to help us win... its being able to drop enemy's and win those gun battles.  Which I have to say Papa has a real talent for.  When one man can get a squad wipe on his own, leaving other members to setup/arm whatever... that's what will win M-Coms!  As seen in our practice games and the bitch of a time we had defending(which I assume was as real to GB's as possible).
What works for him may not work for someone else.  Were you not around in the wee hours of the morning when we played a team of 4...  and none of us could win a gun battle to save our lives?  Maybe it was Rothroq.
Yes, he exampled his expertise in practice.  He was then exampled later on that night by a team that simply could not miss, as were all of us.
It really is just about accuracy;  We all agreed that last night, accuracy was the one thing that kept us from putting up a real fight.  They simply out shot us.
Actually, come to think of it...  accuracy exercises for practice might help a few of us out.  The Caspian Border map is ideal for that.  Teams group at opposite ends of the bridge, then one player from each team gets out on the street.  Target practice at long distance.
I agree... I wasn't sure about bringing up a staged turkey shoot, but it did cross my mind...  I've read a lot online about trying to improve accuracy, and most just say aim a little higher than you think your should( I find especially when moving)... and shoot in bursts(the most obvious). The last bit is something that needs to be trained... and that is anticipating the recoil by slightly pulling down on the thumb stick while shooting.  I have tried this recently and find its a very usefull and tough thing to master... Especially me with heavy thumbs.  I try to play with the sensitivity but can't seem to find a sweet spot.  I just referenced Papa as he seems to have found a good thing, maybe there is something that can be passed along.
Well, without noticing I was doing it, I have always kinda pulled down on my thumb stick when in full auto to keep my shots in a tighter group.
there are videos online that recommend d shooting in 5 rnd bursts, which is also something I tend to do when in a mid range gun battle.
When I am in a situation where I will go full auto (most of the time) I actually aim low and use the recoil from the first round to bring the crosshairs up, and use the pull down on the stick to keep steady form there.
When on the run, my accuracy is shit. You have to account for your movements and the movements of your target. At times my crosshairs will be off the target and I will be connecting, and I am aiming dead at them, but hit nothing but air.
I use a suppressor, it seems to lessen the recoil when aiming down my sights, foregrip also.
Longer range moving target, shoot where they are going not where they are.
This will seem obvious, but stay out of the open. Grab cover if possible.
As far as look sensitivity, I tend to play at about 30%, but that's due to the size of my tv. Smaller screen, I would be playing at 70%
Halo 2 I played at a 10, but that was before I got a flat screen.
BF3 uses projectile bullet physics rather than hitscan. The bullets take time to reach their target. So lead your targets
Popped our cherries with our first GameBattle last night.
UNIT - 4
AR15 SS - 0
Told ya.
As of late last night, UNIT was 8th in the MLG BF3 team rankings.
Nice guys, they gave us positive feedback as a team, and we did in return.
We've played and lost one GB, we are now ranked 83rd.  We have more experience points than many teams who have played quite a few more GB's than us.  I suspect it is because we played a high ranked team.
Upcoming challenges:
SS Gaming - Sunday March 18th @ 9:15pm EDT/8:15pm CDT
Terms:
No 12G Frag Rounds and No Mavs ~ 2 Assault Class Max ~ Core Only
We should call for no mortars as well, even though it is written in the rules.  Leave nothing open to interpretation if possible.
I will not be able to participate from March 16th through the 25th, however I will join the party and do the reporting.  Post up if you want to man up, and I will accept the challenge.
For those who know, this is pparkyy's team, they are ranked 22nd at the moment.
Last night was quite and eye opener.  I found a few things I need to work on myself...Burst fire and look sensitivity fine tuning.  It was great seeing a high ranked team perform.
What I took away from it...
Probe Defense and be flexible.  If 4 up the middle doesn't cut it go 2-2 and try the flanks; another thing they were working hard against us.
Try and set a Beacon outside of our spawn for the aftermath of M-Com arming...
Focusing on "bounding" and revives(Last nights team was very good at moving one guy at a time and keeping the second behind cover for revives).
Not sure if I can make the next Match... Sunday isn't the best night for me.  I hope to see more guys join the MLG...  I think passing on the playoff opening to keep the roster open was a good idea at this point.
Yeah, I guess I could have talked to the team about that roster unlock beforehand.  My apologies.
That's two down from our Alpha squad for Sunday evening.
The challenge time was moved to 10:15pm EDT/9:15pm CDT.  That may be too late for some on a Sunday.
I'm finding that a lot of teams are wanting to do GB's impromptu.  I got hit up by 3 different people today, in addition to this one from pparkyy's team.
