I went out with my buddy Tristan looking for the Skinwalker Ranch the other day. For those who don't know, the Skinwalker Ranch is a ranch near Roosevelt Utah that is supposed to be a hotbed for paranormal, cryptozoological, UFO activity, and cattle mutilations which was one of the driving factors of the original owners leaving the property. The previous owners have claimed to have seen glowing vapors, ghosts, Sasquatch/Bigfoot, flying discs, and a demon wolf that was shot multiple times with hunting rifles without phasing it. The valley that the ranch resides in is steeped in local Indian history as a dark spiritual place that was to be avoided. So, of course, I decided it would be a great idea to go check it out.

We loaded up my 4runner with soda, energy drinks, jerky, and other snacks and made the two hour trek to our gas stop in Roosevelt. While on the drive up I filled Tristan in on the history of the Ranch and how the disturbing goings on forced the previous owners to vacate the property for fear of their lives. Tristan is very much a skeptic and not easily duped into believing outrageous things. He's gone ghost hunting with me and has witnessed some VERY compelling evidence. He truly wants to believe there is "something else" but is still very skeptical.

We drove south through the small town of Ballard on the way to where the Ranch is located and about another half hour we were at the gates of the Ranch. Now at no time did we trespass onto the property as it is still privately owned, supposedly by researchers investigating the paranormal activity there. We stayed on public land the entire time, but that was enough for us. The second we got out of the truck it was apparent that this place was strange. The energy of the valley was unlike anything I had ever felt before, very alien and negative. We also noticed there was a total lack of sound except for us. No wind, no birds, no dogs barking at the Ranch, no machinery at the Ranch...just silence. We were there for about 45 minutes when we both started feeling like we were being watched.

Tristan turned to me and we both said exactly at the same time "someone is watching us." We were about 700 yards away from the Ranch property exploring some old cattle trails. There were several thickets of trees that were several hundred yards across and quite thick. Looking deep into these trees gave us a very uneasy feeling. Again there were no birds in these trees nor even sounds of birds coming from the trees. Not even a breeze to shake the limbs of the trees. Just still and uneasy, eerie quiet. There was a faint, slightly over grown path going through the trees and I felt compelled to walk down it for a ways. After about 30 seconds on the trail I noted how dark and negative this small forest felt. The whole area feels negative, but these woods were worse. It filled me with dread and made me nauseous. The deeper I went into the woods the worse I felt and I started getting dizzy. My head felt heavy and lopsided. I sat down on a stump for a second to rest.

I sat there for what felt like only a moment with my head in my hands. I felt so drained and tired. I also felt waves of negativity washing over me. Like I said, I thought I was only there for a few moments but I heard the panicked yells of Tristan, but it was like he was yelling from across a large distance, but he was only about 45 yards away. I almost didn't hear him, but I looked up at him and he looked really scared. I got up...I felt like I weighed a ton. I walked back down the path and the negativity lifted off of me. I felt much better. The nausea and dizziness started to go away. Once I got to him my head was totally clear again. I noted the look of panic on his face and asked him what was wrong. He told me that once I got into the forest he completely lost sight of me even though I barely went 50 yards in. He paced back and forth for over 20 minutes calling for me at the top of his lungs. He finally got back to the trail and stepped in just a couple steps and felt like he was being pushed backwards out of the woods. He could not walk past the treeline no matter how hard he tried. He got really frightened because it felt to him like it was hands pushing him back and he could not explain it.

We retired back to my 4runner for lunch and to get hydrated as well as to collect our thoughts. Tristan was still visibly shaken and didn't want to talk about it. I knew it was because he was just faced for the first time with something that he could not rationally explain and it was shaking his world view a bit. I've been doing paranormal investigation as a hobby since I was in high school. I've had a lot of weird things happen to me. You never get "used" to it, but you learn how to deal with it after a while. He wasn't eating much and was pretty pale. He then looked at me, almost pleadingly, and asked "You're packing, right?" I told him that indeed I was armed and even lifted my T-shirt to reveal my .357 on my hip as further proof. He seemed to relax a little after that. I didn't want to bring up the fact that, if indeed it was something supernatural, a firearm would have no use in our situation. He seemed to gather a little confidence in a tangible form of self defense and I didn't want to take that away from him, even if it was all in his head.

We went back to the forest and found another, larger, trail to go down. I brought my DSLR camera in case we saw anything worth photographing. I turned on the camera to check how much battery life I had, it was 100%, and then turned it back off to save power. We walked up to the edge of the woods. I looked over at Tristan and asked him if he was ready. He looked at me, obviously nervous, but shook his head that he was ready. We stepped into the grove of trees and again I felt that negativity wash over me. We continued on deeper, trying to maintain some idle talk to keep our minds off the creepiness of the forest. We went on a bit more, then I stopped. All my senses were on fire and I was scanning the darkness of the trees around us very intently. Tristan stopped and asked me what was wrong. I said that I couldn't be sure, but I think someone was following us in the trees. Everywhere I looked I saw shadows that looked very human yet not human at all at the same time. I'd move a little and it looked like they would shift to follow me. But it just had to be the forest making optical illusions, right?

We got to a clearing in the trail where the sun was shining fully down. Even so it felt just as dark and negative as the rest of the forest. We got right up to the edge of it and looking across to the other side we saw very clearly more shadows. They were even more clear and defined than before and you could clearly see eye...stark, intense, white eyes staring directly at us. My hair was on end, my heart raced, my blood ran ice cold. My fight or flight instincts kept telling me to run FAST, but I was able to stop myself. I grabbed my camera. I had to take a photo. I NEEDED Proof! I flipped the power switch and...nothing! The power was completely drained. I had not only just checked the power a quarter hour previous, but had charged it the night before we left to make sure I had power. I flipped it off and on again and nothing. The power light on the back didn't come on, the image processor didn't make it's start up rattle, nothing. DEAD! I started to freak out. I put my hand on my sidearm and told Tristan it was time to leave. We ran through the forest and all around us we heard rustling. It was the first sound we had heard in those woods and it chilled us.

We hit the edge of the woods and saw it was sun down. We stopped to catch our breath but it wasn't for long. The rustling caught up to us at the tree line and it stopped as well. We could see the shadows moving back and forth as if pacing and we could hear breathing. Cold, slow, raspy breathing. We made our way back to my truck and every so often we could hear footsteps and rustling behinds us. By the time we got back to the 4runner it was dark enough that we needed our flashlights. I had a Surefire M4 which throws a pretty bright beam quite a distance. It had fresh batteries bought the day before the trip. Shining the light about in that field it was very dim. We were about 50 yards away from my 4runner and I shined my light on it. There was nothing in front of us to block our view, only the road leading up to my car. When the beam of my light fell on my truck we could clearly see a large, hulking...something standing near it. It looked at us, then turned and ran to the Ranch gate. Once it got to the gate we could no longer see it. We were very leery about going over there for fear of being attacked by either the Ranch owners or...something.

We got in the truck, both very shaken and tired. The drive back down the dusty road to Ballard was long and quiet. We didn't even have the stereo on. Not once did we see another living soul or even another car until we hit Ballard. However, every so often we would see flashed of light from different directions in the fields. Usually it was of an intense blue/white, sometimes a purple/white, much like high powered welding equipment but it was obviously in the middle of fields and there were no other signs of people working, such as flood lights or the sounds of electrical generators.

We got back to Salt Lake about 12:00am and I dropped my friend off at his house. The past couple of days he and I have both been plagued by similar nightmares and the feeling of being watched. I've caught movement in the corners of my eyes like shadows moving on their own. I'm still really uneasy and I think this may be the last time I do any kind of paranormal investigation. I think I've pushed it too far this time and it's got me worried. I checked my camera, it's working fine, however my memory card is totally corrupt. I can't even get any of my old files off it because when I plus it into my laptop it won't read. I've tried on my wife's laptop, her work laptop, and my mother's desktop and nothing. I cannot explain it just going bad as it is not very old and I had just recently used it last week to take some pics of my son.

Masturbating furiously at the edge of a haunted forest will drive the demons out. Try it, I am sure you will be amazed at the results.
Of course if you can get your friend to do a bit of "recon by fire" into the woods the effect will be tenfold....

If I'm ever dumb enough to go back I'll take my old 35mm camera. It's all manual so there is no possible way of electronic failure.

The Wikipedia article on it has the link to Google Maps.

Just read the whole thing. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, so they say. I'd like to give the place a visit. Ghosts, bigfeets, shit like that....I don't necessarily believe in, but would have to experience the phenomenon for myself to make any real judgment. I don't discount those who claim to have experienced supernatural occurrences. There is plenty of stuff in this big ole universe that we'll likely never fully understand.

Oh ya, take a dog too.

They're pretty keen on things you and I cannot see.

You should also take a friend who does not know about the site, observe his or her behavior, say you're taking a hike or something. The power of suggestion can influence their view and the outcome. Laugh with your friends as you drive up there, jam to the radio, have a good time like any other day.

And observe what they do, if they start to feel uneasy on this "hike" and they had no idea that it is "haunted" then you have some further proof.

I am such a non believer in this stuff, I just fail at it. But I do not fault others who can "feel" this stuff. I just need to get hit over the head with something concrete to buy in. So what exactly is "alien energy" and a "dark and negative forest/area". Finally, is a .357 really the right weapon for this? A fucking wheel gun? Lotsa movies the good guy pulls out the wheel gun and you know he is doomed due to not having enough weapon. What round in the .357, something that terminates things alien, spiritually?
