The birthplace and final resting place of George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson—and once one of the most reliably-red of red states—is being rapidly turned into a progressive stronghold. These changes are not the result of an inside agency, or a natural evolution in political thinking, but rather the result of one of the most impactful yet least-discussed policies of the federal government. Each year the federal government prints millions of visas and distributes these admission tickets to the poorest and least-developed nations in the world. A middle-aged person living in parts of Virginia today will have witnessed more demographic change in the span of her life than many societies have experienced in millennia. A census study entitled "Immigrants in Virginia,” released by University of Virginia (UVA) researchers, documented the phenomenon: "Until 1970, only 1 in 100 Virginians was born outside of the United States; by 2012, 1 in every 9 Virginians is foreign-born.” ... UVA’s report explains that more than three out of four of Virginia immigrants (77 percent) are coming from either Latin America or Asia—immigration from Europe, the report writes, "lag[s] far behind” representing only 10 percent of Virginia’s immigrant population. This is consistent with trends nationwide. It's got very little to do with immigration and a lot to do with college "educated" young coming here to find work. Relatively steady job market, high pay, and jobs that require degrees and advanced degrees all add up to a bunch of indoctrinated young voters. Plus, lots of people move here from Maryland because that state is going down the shitter and we have much better schools... for now. They are voting in the Gerry Connollys and Terry McCullifs for this once great state... and its very sad. We're a victim of our own success. JMHO |

JMHO from what you posted, it's obvious you are defending virginia based on your opinion, and not what was it the article edit - increased foreign immigration, legal or illegal, is going to turn many states into hispanic, or muslim run areas with allegience to their race or religion. and we can see what the islamic influence has done to france and england, and hispanic to california. |

I see a silver lining-those who have seen grinding 3rd world Tegucigalpa, Manila, or Mumbai poverty and busted their asses to get themselves and their children into Ivy League STEM career paths can't be "white guilted" into supporting a flat screen, Escalade, and Section 8 welfare state. |

Northern VA's population in Fairfax County and Arlington are what make the state blue. The population is so dense there it just can't be beat.
The last governor's race was very close but Cuccinelli held a significant lead--up until Fairfax began reporting results. It was all over from there. The fact is, it's like any other urbanized central area--the people reliant on services there are concentrated and the rest of the state gets the, "oh well, you get nothing" treatment. |

Another big factor is that Maryland and NOVA compete for government contracts, VA is more business friendly and so the cost of doing business is lower which causes more of it to come to VA. I'n my line of work I have seen 2 datacenters get consolidated from Maryland and moved to VA (Ashburn). Many of the people from those Maryland datacenters moved to VA as a result of this so you also have more left leaning people from Maryland moving to NOVA as well. |

Illegal aliens, by definition, are not eligible to vote. Secondly, recent immigrants (including illegals) are more concerned with economic survival than with politics. And finally, most recent immigrants come from Hispanic countries with Catholic, socially conservative traditions. They're not going to suddenly vote (when and if they become eligible) for tree-hugging pro-abortionists.
The old Tammany Hall-style Democratic political machine, that handed out jobs to immigrants, in exchange for their votes, is a thing of the distant past. |

Hispanic immigrants in Virginia, for the most part, are not politically active. They are more concerned with economic survival. The Democratic party would love to enlist them, but has so far failed to do so. The minority ethnic group that matters in Virginia is the blacks. |
