... What the hell? It looks like the AT-AT's got boob jobs. Not only that, but their legs are like toothpicks in comparison. http://www.sideshowtoy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ralph_mcquarrie_08.jpg ... Those turrets for the AT-AT's main guns actually make more sense than limiting their traversing ability to whatever the neck can turn. |

But none of his art looks like anything in the final movie. Like the reply to your post...these are concepts.
Just like concept drawings of cars or planes etc. Someone told him...robot, walking mechs, snow, bad guy, bad guy in white...and he just went with it. The model makers and stop motion guys did the final work. Quoted:

Star Wars has been androgenized. Metro beta-ed. There'll be a lot of Rhonda Rousey storm trooper ass kicking going on.
Will they flip it? Make the Empire the good guys? Because A Rhonda Rousey storm trooper would believe in the righteousness of Sith government.... |

There I said it. All this fawning over his art and making the movie-makers in Hollywood adopt his designs fully is retarded to the nth degree. And the fanboys who love it so much are probably the same ones who think the snoozefest that is Empire is the best movie and should forget 4 and 6. ... "Empire" had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All "Jedi" had was a bunch of Muppets. |

I like the concept art, but IMO it's more suited to a universe at peace than one that's been at war constantly for decades. It would be for a time where manufacturers worry more about having a refined product, than for war machines that need to be cranked out as fast as possible with no need for sexiness since they're likely to be destroyed in a few weeks anyway. The changes from the concept art that give everything a more industrialized, not quite finished, brute force look to it make it far better. It really gives me the "built for war" feeling. |

Quoted: Ahh but the asshole hipsters who are going nuts over the art saying it was better than the movie stuff has crept into the final designs. The Force Awakens X-Wing, in all its CGI stupidity, looks just like the old hipster concept art. http://tse4.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.M965669c0d79959820257448cda72b7e9o0&pid=15.1 Quoted: Quoted: But none of his art looks like anything in the final movie. And the fanboys who love it so much are probably the same ones who think the snoozefest that is Empire is the best movie and should forget 4 and 6. His concepts were great beginner material, and there's no doubt he's a great artist, but should NOT be adopted in the final designs, unless you're making a 60's era low-budget tv show. Here are some examples.... THANK GOD this didn't make it into the final designs. C3PO looks more like the GIMP than a Human/Cyborg Relations Droid http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jflBGB6fYVI/T3PlqiXPKeI/AAAAAAAAA80/r4GVYrQjr5w/s1600/Ralph+Mcquarrie+c3po.jpg This is also retarded. The lines are too clean for a rugged, fast fighter. And the half-circles are just stupid. A real snubfighter wouldn't be designed that way. http://benjaminsapiens.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/ralph-mcquarrie-star-wars-7.jpg?w=1000&h=502 What the hell? http://news.toyark.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2015/07/Ralph-McQuarrie-Stormtrooper-Statue-Preview.jpg can you please show us an example of what those things actually look like in real life please? |
| I think part of the "magic" of the original STAR WARS (for me at least) was the gritty realism of everyday objects. Things were dirty and broken, dinged, scratched and faded and kept in service well beyond obsolescence. They were heavily repaired and modified and asymmetrical with fashion giving way to function like in our own reality. The further you went up the food chain, things got nicer and newer and in typical military fashion there was an attempt (although not always attained) at uniformity. Up until 1977 sci-fi movies scenes tended to be sterile environments were everything was crisp and clean even in the midst of conflict. |

I think you have a very rudimentary understanding of what concept art is, and what it does, and what his vision meant to Star Wars. It's when concept art is accepted with little or no change is when things get stupid. why? If the director and/or producers like the looks of it and the art dept can make it happen, why not? full disclosure: I have a print of the death star chase between the x-wing and tie-wing fighter(that was earlier posted), autographed by McQuarrie, hanging on the wall |

The rebels were the salvagers. The ad hoc savants. The Empire was the State. The rebels were the hippies. Hippies with guns. This was the 70's. Lucas must have been a hippie. Lucas sold his hippie soul to WD. Now everything will be wonderful PC worldliness seeking perfection in an imperfect world. Cast off the old, bring in the new. |

Aren't you the nerf herder that claimed BB-8 and the whole first trailer was CGI and then the real world models and sets started showing up online shortly afterward? You troll about as well as ewoks ride speeder bikes.
