I'm watching WarGames and feeling old (yet still appreciating a young Ally Sheedy).
I used to have a lot of fun war dialing to find unlisted bbs systems and other things. I know a lot of our members grew up in the world of TCP/IP, but I'm sure some of you fondly remember the sound of two systems negotiating a connection over an analog line. |

never wardialed, but I might have witnessed pager bombing a few times.

Yes, I remember acoustic modems.
I bought my first computer in 1979, an Exidy Sorcerer. it cost me $500. I was 15 years old. I bought a surplus CRT monitor out of a surplus electronics catalogue. I used a Radio Shack tape recorder for program storage. Programmed it in Basic and assembly language. I miss those days. I actually sold the Exidy a bout 2 years ago for $550. |

Explain wardialing to us technotards please. View Quote Brute force hunting for a modem connect signal. You set the autodialer to run a string of numbers looking for a handshake tone. If nothing responds or a voice the modem hangs up. People used to do the same looking for fax machines to fax bomb ads to also. Damn I'm old. |
|
No... but I did discovered the jerky boys in like 1993....and that 1-800 numbers could be dialed for free from pay phones....
|
|
we had the first sat phone and we used to crank call skylab and order pizza
|
|
I grew up with computers and BBS' my dad ran one of the largest ones in
the south east in the 1980s and this is the first time I have ever heard of wardialing. |
|
|
Yep, had a $3000 phone bill to explain to my parents at age 13.
It was fun though. V |

Wardialed to get Lolapolooza tickets in '92.
16 POTS lines baby. |
|

Before I turned 18 I did. Day I turned 18 I burned all my hacker stuff. Around 1980-1981 though
I got into a little mischief. There were interesting things out in the wild back then. Only scared the shit out of myself once, though. |

You also had to do this to get access to some of the busier BBS's back in the day. Keep dialing till you got an open line. But when you got through you could download all of the games that you wanted at 2400 baud.

As soon as I got home from school, I would set the computer to start dialing while I did homework. When I connected, I would suspend homework until I was done with whatever I was doing on the BBS. Lather, rinse, and repeat. |
|
I've tried it before, but not for long and never found anything. I was too afraid of getting into trouble.
I also still have a piece of paper with all of the BBS places that I had an account on. The phone number, my username, password, everything. Close to 30 of them. |

Something better left to the age before caller ID... Then again, people would just think it's another robocall hangup for the Indian Microsoft Tech Support. Huh. Maybe people DO still wardial
|

Good to see you back OP.
Have no clue what the fuck this thread is about. |

I did it a few times back in my C64 days. Never found anything of interest.

I remember two older kids typing the word "Pencil" into the display computer at K-Mart right after War Games came out on cable.

borrowed a 2400 baud modem from work a few times and accessed mainframe from home on a DOS based PC.
Only had one phone line so no one could call me when surfin' the non-net |
