What nationality was the relative?

Looks like some varietal of a Sgian Dubh, but maybe Nordic.

I don't know, but it is very interesting.

The utensils mount in the sheath? That spike may be an eating utensil,  which kind  of makes me think Nordic,  that sheath mounting as well

I initially thought sgian-dubh as well, but I think the Sudanese dagger is most likely correct given the mounting. What I do find interesting is the similarity in the designs...

Grip is distinctly different, but the sheath and utensils are certainly the same.

Yours looks to be more vintage and a user. Grip looks to be some kind of bone or possibly tusk

Yeah, that was an old Toyabe grade pull.  A poster once put up a photo of a  weird looking belt driven fan asking what it was. Toyabe without missing a beat said something like it was a Ford Model A auxiliary hot climate fan...and was correct.
