My wife goes to watch sex and the city with her friends once a week. I guess they have a few drinks, and chat, I really have no clue but its good time for me to spend taking care and finishing any unfinished projects, or start new ones. She wants me to go with her last night because her friends husband has his friends over that same night to play warhammer 40k. From what se told me they have little handpainted army guys and the st them up on a table. I was thinking they are recreating actual historical wars or at least civil war era battles so I decided to see whats its about. NOPE. It is a Sci-Fi board game. They roll dice, read rule books, diss "bolt" guns over lasers, make "boom, boom, smoke, smoke" sounds and whatnot. One of these guys is explaining to me how a slug round works.  No one knew what an Uzi was evn though the guns the figures had looked like one. II wanted to tell them about how a minigun sounds the firsttime you hear , but didnt. I wound up driving to the corner store for beer and a cigar, and going back to sit on the friends porch for two hours watching the city and its traffic pass by. It would have been more entertaining to hang out with the girls watching movies than watch warhammer 40k be played. Does anyone know about this? some people take it serious. They had thousands$$$$ in this game. |
Dude I totally feel you. First time I watched someone play I was like   and then I bailed. Sure that stuff may have been fun back when we didnt have things called video games but now we do and there is no excuse for that retardation. The only thing more lame is LARP |
You can buy them pre-painted, but most are plain so you can paint them yourself. Matching colors for armies, personal touch and so on. No, im not into, but know people who used to be |
The tabletop is strong with this one! BTW, OP, there are plenty of different games that are just like this, they are referred to as "tabletop games", warhammer is just a prevelant one. Kinda like the WoW of tabletop if you will

Oh yeah and another thing I feel neccesarry to point out, I could never berate anyone for playing these kinds of games. Maybe a slightly lighthearted jab but really it'd feel like I'm going up to someone mentally handicapped and yelling at them that they are a retard, etc. |
 I actually have never played the tabletop game, but I've played the "Dawn of War" computer game and I find the "grim dark far future" setting pretty entertaining. It's ridiculously over-the-top, of course, but that's the whole point. I can't comprehend spending money on the tabletop stuff, though, nor the time and effort. |

I actually played it for a little while with my 2 boys (14 and 7). I was the painter and scene builder, that was actually more fun. They have outgrown it now. I know what your saying though about the types of people that play it on a regular basis. They are not all "strange" but most, in my experience, are off a little. I used to take my oldest to the store and watch him play (I never left him alone). I found it a little disturbing that people my age(late 30's) would get all animated and constantly be making "swoosh, boom, bang, crash....." noises. ETA:Oh, I will say I still play the video game on occassion. It's actually pretty fun. |

Geez...coming from a guy who has Boba Fett as an Avatar.... I used to play 40K and the Epic scale [insert nerd icon here] Also made over $1K selling my painted miniatures a few years back. Still have a few special pieces around here somewhere. And for what its worth - much like the Star Wars world you appear to enjoy Yoda,  there's a whole 'world' and back-story within Warhammer 40K as well.Then I realized I liked sex better..... |

For a man with boba fett as an avatar - you sure aren't much of a geek. Warhammer was the original Worlds of Warcraft. People who get sucked into it spend lots of money and time making their armies. I never really got into it - but I have seen it played. Some people like playing, others really enjoy painting the models more than anything. Guys who are really good at painting can sell their armies for a decent sum. Other people play similar games - if you like - there ARE people who do historical battles from roman times to the civil war to WWII to Iraq. Others forgo the painted miniatures and play pure 'war games' that use square chits to represent units on a hex grid map. I used to have Blitzkrieg which was a great WWII game - and some how it got lost/stolen? No idea where it ended up. Anyway - to each his own. |
OMG LARP is pathetic. Grown ups doing that should be incarcerated Frankly I am sorta thinking anything where grown men pretend shit is happening is pretty damned lame. Pretending is for children. Pretend stuff or boating with hot gals and fun friends on the weekend Pretend stuff or cruising down the coast with the top down Pretend stuff or out in the garage tuning/repairing a vehicle or doing body work Pretend stuff or making a piece of furniture with your hands Pretend stuff or the range Hell Pretend stuff or sitting on the front porch enjoying a breeze a beverage and converstion with your wife or girlfriend. As long as conversation is limited. etc etc etc... |

Oh yeah. I played both Warhammer and Warhammer 40k when I was in jr high/high school. I had Orc/goblin armies. The figures are made in England and are excruciatingly expensive. It's time-consuming to paint them and if you play the game? Set aside a day or two, they take forever. I did a cost-benefit analysis when I was in high school and decided it wasn't worth it and gave it up. |
To each their own I say. I went into one of those stores at the mall once. My friend reads/collects comics, and it was a combo store I guess. Anyway, some of the figurines look cool, so I was looking around. There was a scene set up on a table, but at this point I thought it was marketing. I had no idea it was some dude's setup ready for battle. No one was at the table so I picked up one of the bigger figurines. It was of some huge demon thing with wings, and the wings fell off  . At this point the guy comes over with a concerned look on his face but says something like "how do you like my army?" I mumble something, put the figurine back down with the wings balanced as well as I could. After we left the shop my buddy told me, "you know they were about to play and you just broke his demon." Oops. |
Or went shooting in the midsummer heat, throwing money away with each shot sent downrange Hmm...with some effort and an SBS stamp, you might be able to shorten a Saiga 12-gauge, add some extra material onto it to change the contours, and make a bolter. What's the best loading for (insert 40K enemy here)? |

Love the back story and the 40K books from Black Library rock (Gaunts Ghosts for the win!), the computer games are decent, but I can't see how people can spend the time and effort into acquring and painting the tabletop pieces. Now Battlefleet Gothic....that's an entirely different thing! |

I tried getting into it in when i was in High school it was fun what little i played but i suck at painting and model building and it seemed i spent more time putting them togther compared to playing. That and Games workshop is evil. I would finnaly get my army toghter go down to play and "um this unit is no longer legal" not to mention the rediculas pricing. and my atrocias spelling . Couple of my friends play war machine its simular armys are alot smaller so its cheaper to play. I just cant get into it with my pathetic modeling skills.

| I've honestly never been into anything but video games but some of the Warhammer adaptations were good. I liked the old squad based game, Space Hulk. That game was cool as hell. Of course that was from the DOS days, but I still have it and DOSBox when I feel like being nostalgic. Of course, Warhammer Online (not 40k though) is coming out soon. That one looks interesting too. |
Never got into W40K table top, but did play a lot of the computer games. As for the 'ZOMG pretend shit is teh suxx0r" crowd, piss off  I spend a decent amount of time writing... used to play D&D a lot, which is where a lot of my fantasy story-lines come from. Now, most of my stories are sci-fi or .mil-fiction... I'm hoping to get some stuff published in the future and if I'm good enough, I'd love to do it full time. I'm also learning to play guitar now; I'm enjoying it, but my fingers not so much. Doing covers of other's songs doesn't take any imagination, just the ability to read... doing your own stuff; however, definately takes imagination/inspiration. Overall, imagination is an awesome thing... it's also a frequently misunderstood thing. I shake my head at LARPers and roll my eyes, but the way I see it; different strokes for different folks, silly as it may be. |

Me too. I don't play the tabletop game (PC game is pretty good though), but I do really enjoy the WH40K novels. I've read most of the books, but the Eisenhorn trilogy are my personal favorites. Gaunts Ghosts are also good, as well as most of the Horus Heresy books. The backstory from the WH40K universe is really very interesting. If I was a little more in tune with my nerdy side, I might give the tabletop game a try. |

Here are some examples of why: This is a Nun This is a Nun on 40k This is a Librarian This is a Librarian on 40k This is a Tank This is a Tank on 40k This is a Traitor This is a Traitor on 40k Everything is bigger, meaner, has more guns, and is covered in chains and spikes and fire. What's not to like? |
About as lame as some people see folks who put thousands of dollars into rifles that are only used to shoot sheets of paper or empty coke cans. Everyone's hobby is lame to someone else. |

I used to play in high school, got out of it about the time I got into shooting to free up money for real guns. That being said I thought it was a great game. Combined modeling and gaming, two things I quite enjoyed and when I got out of it I made $2k from selling off my two painted armies. I will grant you the universe it's set as well as the back story is retarded, but the game itself is a whole hell of a lot more engaging and entertaining then fantasy sports. |

It is just another tabletop wargame-you could put WW2, Civil war, etc. in its place and have the same thing. The game is fun-I have played a few times with some friends years ago. The planning of your Strategy and how you put togther your squads in tactical situations is engrossing. Biggest problem is the time, huge amounts of money you have to sink into it(models, rulebooks, etc) and the overfanatics who take the fun out of game. I have a full collection of the old stand alone 40k board game "Space Hulk". I have been offered over $300 for my set and I won 't give it up. Fun as hell board game that only takes a hour to play. |
