What's the problem with HR133? Sounds like that would be a good bill for us. Get rid of the gun free school zone or am I miss reading that? I was thinking the same thing. Of course, without the text of the bill we can't know for sure. |

HR 21 is up on Moran's Facebook page.
Washington, DC – Congressman Jim Moran, Northern Virginia Democrat, reintroduced the “NRA Members’ Gun Safety Act” (H.R. 21) in the 113th Congress. The legislation would implement five commonsense gun safety reforms that polling shows are supported by at least 63 percent of NRA members. “The “NRA Members’ Gun Safety Act” (H.R. 21) goes after commonsense, popular, publicly polled, non-controversial gun safety measures that a majority of NRA members support, yet are opposed by the leadership at the NRA,” said Rep. Moran. “The NRA is working to block gun safety reforms, regardless of merit, and despite the schism between the group and their membership. In the wake of the most recent tragedy, enough is enough. It’s time to take steps to better protect the public in ways that do not infringe on the 2nd Amendment.” Specifically, the popular provisions in the legislation would: • Require background checks for every gun purchase (74% NRA member support); • Require background checks on gun shop employees (79% NRA member support); • Prohibit individuals on the terrorist watch list from purchasing firearms (71% NRA member support); • Require gun owners to report to police when their guns are lost or stolen (64% NRA member supports); and • Establish minimum standards for concealed carry permits (63-75% NRA member support for each standard) Moran continued: “As the first bill I introduced this Congress, H.R. 21 represents one of my top priorities – taking commonsense steps to prevent future gun-related deaths.” To read a summary of the legislation, please visit: http://moran.house.gov/press-release/moran-introduces-%E2%80%9Cnra-members%E2%80%99-gun-safety-act%E2%80%9D |

WASHINGTON -- There aren't many people who would consider the Ford Motor Co. or a 2-year-old to be terrorist threats, but the United States' premier database for classifying such dangers includes both, according to Department of Homeland Security officials interviewed in a Senate committee investigation. The report, released this week by the Senate Homeland Security Committee's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, focused on the dubious counterterrorism effectiveness of some 77 "fusion centers." The report found these centers do a terrible job funneling useful threat information from the local law enforcers to national intelligence agents. The report concluded that much of the information generated was useless and some was potentially unconstitutional. But it also found that the premier database that the fusion centers -- and indeed all of the nation's counterterrorism systems -- depend on is so deeply flawed that Homeland Security officials mock it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/02/terrorist-watch-list-database_n_1936515.html "One study found that in Florida CCW holders were 300 times less likely than the general population to commit a crime. The firearm crime rate among license holders, annually averaging only several crimes per 100,000 licensees, is a fraction of the rate for the state as a whole. Between the beginning of Florida’s permitting program and the end of 2005, the state issued 1,104,468 concealed weapons permits. During that time period; 3,643 permits were revoked—a rate of about .3 percent. Of those revocations; 2,941 involved a crime after licensure; 157 of those crimes involved the use of a firearm. " "A Texas study found that CCW holders in that state were "5.7 times less likely to commit a violent crime, and 14 times less likely to commit a non-violent offense." "North Carolina reports only 0.2% of their 263,102 holders had their license revoked in the 10 years since they have adopted the law." Georgia: "studies by numerous independent researchers and state agencies have found that concealed handgun license holders are five times less likely than non-license holders to commit violent crimes" in 2004, the state of Utah had a permit revocation rate of about .4 percent. The rate for revocations due to firearm offenses was .02 percent.. between 1986 and 2003, only .8 percent of Kentucky's 71,770 licenses were revoked for any reason in 2001, Indiana revoked about .2 percent of its outstanding concealed weapon permits since the inception of its concealed weapons program in 1995, Virginia has seen a revocation rate of just .2 percent. between October of 1994 and February of 1996, the state of Wyoming issued 2,273 permits and revoked four, a revocation rate of just under .2 percent. between 1996, when its shall-issue law passed, and September of 1999, the state of Oklahoma issued 30,406 permits and revoked only 62–a rate of .2 percent. |

Some of these don't even make sense...
One I didn't see that I actually wouldn't have a problem with simply on the basis that it seems like a gaping loophole in terms of making sure shitheads don't illegaly purchase a firearm is face to face purchases of any firearms. If I had to compromise on anything, this would be one that I would run with. Quoted: H.R.141 Latest Title: To require criminal background checks on all firearms transactions occurring at gun shows. Pardon my ignorance... don't we already do this? H.R.21 Latest Title: To provide for greater safety in the use of firearms. Ok... deal. Attention everyone, Please be more safe. You can start by READING THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! H.R.93 Latest Title: To amend chapter 44 of title 18, United States Code, to restrict the ability of a person whose Federal license to import, manufacture, or deal in firearms has been revoked, whose application to renew such a license has been denied, or who has received a license revocation or renewal denial notice, to transfer business inventory firearms, and for other purposes. Restrict how? Maybe my my grasp of the English language is slipping, but that doesn't seem to make any sense. H.R.137 Latest Title: To ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the national instant criminal background check system and require a background check for every firearm sale. Pardon my ignorance... don't we already do this? Isn't the only way you're prohibited from buying if you're a criminal? Or do they want to include mental illness as part of criminal background checks? I have no problem with making the NIC idiot proof... I've seen the dealers at gun shows... they're not exactly rocket surgeons, so it's certainly within the realm of possibility that someone slips through the cracks. H.R.72 Latest Title: To provide for emergency deployments of United States Border Patrol agents and to increase the number of DEA and ATF agents along the international border of the United States to increase resources to identify and eliminate illicit sources of firearms into Mexico for use by violent drug trafficking organizations and for other lawful activities, and for other purposes. Is this to make up for Fast and Furious? Beyond that I don't see how more DEA and ATF is going to fix gun violence in schools. H.R.34 Latest Title: To provide for the implementation of a system of licensing for purchasers of certain firearms and for a record of sale system for those firearms, and for other purposes. Some states do this... and it's a royal pain in the ass. It doesn't make anyone any safer. And it would cripple commerce at gun shows. H.R.138 Latest Title: To prohibit the transfer or possession of large capacity ammunition feeding devices, and for other purposes. No no and no. This would definitely be the end. H.R.142 Latest Title: To require face to face purchases of ammunition, to require licensing of ammunition dealers, and to require reporting regarding bulk purchases of ammunition. This one is just retarded and again does nothing for safety. H.R.133 Latest Title: To repeal the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 and amendments to that Act. This one sounds like a good thing... is that possible? Quoted: We are NOT farked. Call / write your rep now! Tell them "NO NEW GUN CONTROL!" Yeah... that works wonders. And with a sprinkle of pixie dust you may also get some rights back to boot. |

Definitely call/write your senator and congressman, definitely donate to the NRA and GOoA, and certainly don't give up hope because, despite the media echo chamber, it is far from a sure thing that these bills will become law.
For one, a majority of Americans, according to USAToday/Gallup, oppose reinstating the Assault Weapons ban. Policy gains are understood by all parties to be zero, and given public opinion, political gains for anyone who doesn't represent solid blue states/district is dubious. Let's review civics 101. In order for a bill to actually become law, it has to make it out of committee in both the House and the Senate, and the senate majority leader or the speaker of the house of representatives has to schedule a floor vote. First things first, will these bills make it out of committee? In the Senate, probably. In the House, probably not. The reason is that republicans, as the majority party, also control all the committees in the house of representatives. Then Speaker Boehner has to schedule a floor vote. Unless he actually believes in banning assault weapons, there's no reason for him to do this. In fact, he has every reason not to. CNN and MSNBC are going to bash him, sure, but the only people that matter are the voters in his district, and the voters in his district are overwhelmingly conservative. He won in 2010 by 35 points, and ran unopposed in 2012. He will only lose votes in a general election, but not enough to cost him his seat. His bigger problem is losing to a primary challenger. Gun owners are a very high propensity voting bloc, and a very unforgiving one. Enough gun owners will surely show up to defeat his nomination. Oh, and don't forget Harry Reid. He represents a comparatively gun-loving state and has, rightly, built a reputation as one of the Senate's most solid defenders of gun rights. He would throw all of that away if he voted for an AWB, or even allowed it to come to a vote. |
|
They are throwing everything they got at the wall and seeing what sticks.
They know the longer they wait, the less willing the people are going to accept gun control measures. The fact that they did this pretty much shows me that they don't have shit. If they had something, they wouldn't be playing legal shotgun tactics. |

Quoted:
We are NOT farked. Call / write your rep now! Tell them "NO NEW GUN CONTROL!" Yeah... that works wonders. And with a sprinkle of pixie dust you may also get some rights back to boot. Re: 141 and 137, they're working to completely eliminate private firearms transfers and make all transfers through FFLs. That is the so-called "gun show loophole" |
