Wow!
You REALLY get the sensation of speed from that one still photo!!! |
|
For perspective...
Kenny Bernstein was the first to go 300 mph in Top fuel in the 1/4 mile in 1992. |
|
|
You can't really get a sense of how truly fast that is on video either with the camera following the car...
Here is the pass... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8YRrkAhYy0 |

I've already seen these guys do it.
600 MPH Jet Dragsters: Woodburn Dragstrip |
|
View Quote Woodburn is 1/4 mile we are talking 300 mph in half that distance. |
|
So basically they're almost at top speed halfway down the track.
Holy retina compression, Batman! |
|
View Quote I had the same reaction when I first saw one in person but I said shit They're quite a marvel. You feel the pressure hit you and even some heat. |
|
Top fuel is quicker than a jet dragster and they are even faster than an EV...LOL

Quoted: They don't run 1/4 mile anymore they shortened the race to 1000' to give them enough room to stop. View Quote Yeah, so 1/8 mile is 660 ft or about 2/3 of the total 1000 ft top fuel track. They are only getting forty mph more in the last third. Mandated rev limits and gear ratios pretty much have capped terminal speed. The last frontier is acceleration in the first 1/8th. |

I bet thatll suck your eyeballs straight into the back of your skull.

View Quote The reason 300 in the 1/8th became a thing is because someone put a 30g bounty out for the first person to do it. There are issues limiting these cars as you mention. It’s also typical to see cars not pick up as much in the second 1/8th. For example my street car runs 119 mph in the 1/8th and 150 ish in the 1/4. |

Drag racing is all about elapsed time. Eddie Hill Mr 4.99, first <5 sec in the quarter understands.
|
|
View Quote While neat in their own way, I haven’t seen one that matches a top fuel car. 300 in the 1/8 is insane. |

There is a 300 mph in the 1/8th bounty that pays 30g to the first person to do it. That is why they are even shooting for it plus it gives non drag racing fans some perspective on how fast these cars are. |

The 8G figure is only as you start pulling maneuvers and it levels back off once you’re stabilized |

Quoted: For certain classes. View Quote Yes I believe it was 2008 after Doug Kallita’s crash that killed him. They shortened the race to 1000’ for top fuel and funny car at that time. Most fast “street car” racing is only 1/8th mile now. As the cars have gotten so fast running 1/4 mile on no prep or streets is too dangerous. |

I thought the jet drag cars doing it in a 1/4 mile was impressive.
That's bloody FAST! |

Seeing top fuel cars in person is an unreal experience. You really cant grasp the power these cars have watching on TV/video. I highly recommend it even if you aren't into drag racing. Just remember ear pro and don't stand right behind one when they fire them up in the pits to seat the clutch. It's like a light version of getting pepper sprayed. I learned the hard way why the crew puts on gas masks.

View Quote Jet cars can actually go much faster, but they are limited to 300 mph for safety reasons. I've seen jet cars go much faster than 300 in the quarter mile. If I recall correctly, 345 is the fastest I've seen. For what it's worth, Kitty O'Neil went 3.22 at 412 mph in the quarter in an H2O2 powered dragster back in 1977 - 45 years ago! |

Also the force of drag is related to the square of the velocity. So that last 40 mph the velocity is only increasing by about 10%, but the increase in power required is 100%. Even though those things make crazy power they are already near max power 100' off the line once the tires hook up so it is just a race against time at that point. If you made the track 1/2 mile long they probably wouldn't go a whole bunch faster with the set up they have right now. |
