I vote:
1. Bowline 2. Taut-line Hitch 3. Clove Hitch 4. Sheet bend 5. Square Knot What say you? |
There's a pretty strong argument to be made for just learning the figure-eight, as it can be used to bend two lines, make a loop, tie into a harness, and tie to an object with minimal variation.
That's why my victims keep escaping! Shitty knots!
Ooh, did I say that out loud? |
Can't argue with that. Only know 3 on your list with bowline being my go-to favorite.
Trucker's hitch has been one of the most useful in my life. Probably more than any other.
A bowline can also be tied with one hand which is sometimes useful, but it takes practice to do.
I dated a girl in college who bought me a book of knots for Valentines day |
Of those 5 I basically never use the clove hitch. I use the other four pretty regularly, enough that my wife makes fun of me for it.
Where's the Half-Hitch? Very useful! My FIL - and old Navy man taught it to me decades ago. Very useful!

8-series and a truckers/frost hitch.
8 for snapping into a line, anchor, hauling, can put two ropes together, go around an object, etc. truckers for tying things down. Water knot useful for webbing. ETA: “if you don’t know a knot, tie a lot!” |

Those are fine. Not many of us will actually be doing improvised rappels out of buildings with our paracord bracelets and webbing belts.

I was really expecting an Epstein did knot kill himself punchline as the 5th one.

Agree.
Other contenders: Add surgeon’s knot. Tautline/trucker’s/hunter’s hitch. Prusik. |
I know all of those , and many more.
Eagle scout, Military, FD, highangle rescue, fisherman, knots have always been part of my life. |
I have found far more uses for the Dragonfly Shibari than the clove hitch.
I have grown to like the Farrimond Friction Hitch more than the Tautline Hitch, as it's quick release.
Attached File As others have already said, the trucker's hitch, alpine butterfly, and figure eight knot are also very useful. Two others that I haven't seen mentioned yet are the marlinspike hitch and the Becket hitch (basically a sheet bend), both of which are incredibly useful for hanging hammocks. |

I teach and require:
Overhand Figure 8 Figure 8 on a bite Figure 8 follow through Bowline Water Double fisherman Prussic Munter hitch I encourage: Alpine butterfly Demo: Double figure 8 |
Most of the knots that I run across that are done by others are hatchet knots.

Well, I lived ten years on my sailboat, mostly in the western Caribbean. I only used the bowline. That was my 3rd boat. Too man6y knots confuse me.

What bid the one you use for nylon fishing string? If you can tie that and not have it slide apart you have accomplished something

I use the bowline and taut line hitch more than any others.

The zeppelin bend (b-q knot) is a useful bend. The barrel knot is a great self tightening hitch. Knowing secure finishes for a bowline is necessary in life support work. Munter-mule is great for simple load releasing applications.
