Started on Sunday. Figure oh well I grind the shit out of my teeth prolly was clenching hard all weekend.
Fast forward to yesterday morning. Unbearable pain. Went to dentist. Took X Rays. Sent me to a specialist. This tooth has already had a root canal about 15 years ago and it looks like they never got all the way to the bottom. They're going to retreat it next week. Currently on Amoxicillin and ripping down Ibuprofens. Call me a wimp but this shit is the most insane pain i've ever had. Today is slightly better. Hopefully the antibiotics kick in soon. |

800mg of ibuprofen might knock it down, a little. You know it's bad when they go to numb it to work on, and they reach their max and it still hurts...

lol i was at that point yesterday. Ripping this molar out cant hurt any worse than it does now.

Condolences, OP. Been there, done that, more than once. Never again!

Yeah, it sucks. I wound up with one just before a week vacation to Mexico with no time to get into the dentist. I spent the entire vacation drunk.
Ibuprofen might help, but also might not if the cause of the pain is pressure. |

Can you have a tooth pulled that has already had a root canal??
I keep seeing it suggested, but I did not think that was possible. I thought they had already drilled out everything they could, or should have... |
|
OP, I found Aleve to be much better at mitigating tooth pain.

Glad your seeing a dentist since abscesses are nothing to fool with.

Gotta knock out the infection before they can pull it. Takes a few days, and good antibiotics. Otherwise, that infection gets into the blood, which is No Fun At All. View Quote It shouldn't take a week . By the OP post he's going to the dentist again next week. Sounds to me like they are trying to save the tooth |

That’s some real pain. I’ve seen people in tears with an abcessed tooth. Hope it gets better soon.

This happened to me with the first molar I had a root canal and crown done on. About a year after the procedure, it became abscessed and another dentist was able to re-do the root canal to correct what the first dentist didn't do correctly.
I remember putting up with the pain for about a month without doing anything to get it taken care of. The infection would blow out the side of my gum, occasionally, to relieve itself like a pressure cooker. After a few days, I knew exactly where to poke my gum to manually purge it |

Here's a little country temp fix for you.
Get yourself a shot of whatever hard liquor you have available. Don't drink it...not yet anyway. Get it in your mouth and hold it over the tooth. Tilt your head or whatever to make sure the tooth and the gum around it is fully saturated with the liquor. It's going to burn. A lot. Keep it there until the nerve deadens, might take a minute or so. Then drink or spit out the alcohol. That'll kill the sensation for a few hours at a time. Repeat as needed. This plus a lortab or some other sort of happy pill is the key to surviving until they can fix it or the antibiotics kick in and stomp out the infection. |

Same issue a couple years back, had to have a re-treat of a root canal. OTC meds just didn't cut it, I ended up going to urgent care for oxys. Ice helped a lot too. It definitely sucks, hope you feel better soon.

I had one and it didn't hurt at all?? Everything was fine until the gum between my two teeth busted open with pus and I was all "what the fuckkkkkkkk??????" Emergency root canal and they had to slice my gum open to drain/remove the rupture and stitch it back up.

I had one last year and couldn't get in to see a dentist for 3 days. I tried to pull my own tooth it hurt so badly

Quoted: Pretty sure that is what mine was. Crown over root canal. Pretty common to have issues with these later. View Quote I waited too long to have a crown done on mine and the tooth cracked down the middle. I told the dentist forget about trying to save this thing just pull it. Waste of a $900 root canal |

400mg ibu, 1000mg acetaminophen, every 6 hours. My dentist had me take that when I needed a root canal, the combination of those two plus the penicillin really helped.

You're not heading to the dentist to get it fixed today are you?

Here's a little helper tip. Stand up. Lightly close your teeth together. Jump as high as you can.

View Quote first treatment, and for the money spent (since you'll be paying for the RC and likely a new crown) you're already halfway to covering the cost of an implant. If you do have it pulled, at least keep your options open and have them put a graft in when they do it. FWIW, I've had two teeth go bad the way you have, and it's absolutely the worst pain in my life. I bruised my fist punching walls to give me pain elsewhere. The only thing that stopped the pain was a licocaine injection -- my tooth went bad on a weekend and I met my dentist at 7AM Monday morning, and if he was late I brought pliers as a backup. Reopening the tooth for the root canal will relieve a lot of pain, even without removing the tooth. Once my tooth was opened it literally squealed from the pressure release as the pus worked its way out of the drilled hole. It's possible the original RC was done properly, and that you have a genetic condition in your tooth root called a "delta formation" where the nerves branch out. RCs can't treat teeth that are configurated that way at the root. I found this out the hard way. |

Worse than kidney stone passing? View Quote I'd rate them on a somewhat similar level regarding actual level of pain. I will say that kidney stones are worse for this simple truth - there's no easy solution to reduce or eliminate the pain. Drugs barely touch it. Abscessed tooth you can use antibiotics to kill the infection, alcohol to numb the nerve, and pain killers to basically put the issue to bed until it resolves itself. The only real solutions to kidney stones involve costly medical procedures or letting time and nature run its course. |

LOL, I’m sitting at the endodontists office right now to have a retreatment done on a root canal from 7 years ago.
Tooth pain rivals child birth. |

Clindamycin works better for me than amoxicillin. But the biggest helper is a methylprednisolone pack. It's like a turbocharger for the antibiotics.
That along with some Toradol for pain and inflammation. |

I was thrown from a horse and broke 4 vertebrae. The doc asked where was I on the pain scale. I said I was about a 6. He said if this is a 6, whats a 10?
I asked "you ever had an abscessed tooth? |

At 26 I still had a baby tooth left that the dentist said apparently never had the adult tooth come in under it. Anyway, they told me to be extra careful with it as it only had baby tooth roots and is not as strong as adult teeth.
Flash forward to my wedding (on a Saturday). At dinner after the ceremony. I great pain sets in under that baby tooth. Over the next 24 hours it forms into a nice lump of an abscess (Sunday). By Sunday night, I'm in blinding pain. Ibuprofen was the only thing that could take off the edge. Monday, wife calls my dentist. She says she'll squeeze me in between procedures. 2 hours later, I am no longer in pain and short one tooth . I just about fell to my knees and kissed my dentists feet, I was so grateful. She them informs me that I unnecessarily ruined my honeymoon. Says that she would have opened the office saturday night or sunday and seen me, as I've been with her for years, I just had to call her. Well shit. Point is. That shit sucks. And I feel you bro. |

I was right there with you the weekend before last. It started with a little toothache Thursday night. By Friday night it was throbbing and my gum was swelling. So, I swished and drank several shots of vodka, took 3 tylenol, and tried to sleep.
Saturday morning, the entire side of my face swollen to the point I could barely see out of one eye, and everything hurt. Wife says that's it, you're going to the walk-in clinic. The doctor at the walk in clinic say s, "Holy shit, I think the infection has gotten into your blood. You need to go to the emergency room right fuckin now, because I'm afraid you're gonna have a stroke right now!" My BP was like 200/130, and my pulse was a steady 130 with a fever of 101. The ER doc lanced my gum and about a quart of the nastiest pus I've smelled poured out. They gave me scrips for Vicodin and Amoxycillin, and it took about 7 days for all the swelling to go down. I go see the dentist in 2 more days. |

I'm 30 in November and my teeth have been pretty damn healthy all my life. Maybe only 1 or 2 cavities my whole life. Except this friggen tooth. |
