Daredevil climber makes history as the first to scale Yosemite's famed 3,000-ft El Capitan mountain - without a single piece of safety
gear
A professional climber - and star of National Geographic's upcoming documentary Solo - has made history as the first to ascend Yosemite's famed El Capitan mountain completely rope free.Alex Honnold scaled the 3,000-ft vertical ascent - which is higher than the world's tallest sky scraper Burj Khalifa - in just under four hours, on Saturday the magazine revealed. The 31-year-old, who camped over the night before in the Californian national park, began his climb at 5.32am PDT on Saturday. Honnold had little more than the clothes on his back, and a small bag of chalk for his hands, as he scaled the cliff face. More info Its crazy watching this guy climb. One false move, one hand hold give away and he would be Internet lore.

Damn. I was just asking myself what I should do this weekend. "free solo El cap" was third on my list.
Oh well. First and second were surf GD. |

That's cool.
Sustained 5.12. I'm fearful for the day he tries The Nose. |

He must have a death wish. However, he must be extremely strong to make that climb in the manner in which he did. I will give him his due for being very strong, but he is still a fool in my eyes.

He mentions being freaked out in certain situations, but he's apparently able to keep his calm much better than 99.999% of humans.

I remember seeing some YouTube a few years ago of some other guy speed free climbing what I thought was el cap. Cameras were placed along his route and there were a few 'no hands' moments as he transitioned across the route.
I thought this had been done before, what am I conflating it with? |

There are old climbers and there are bold climbers...
I hope he realizes his limits before he finds them. |

I'm normally curmudgeon-ish about this sort of thing, but that is all kinds of awesome. The 60 Minutes video made the little fellah retract a bit, though.

Watched some videos of Alex Honnold a few years ago. He's so relaxed and focused that it was weird. Something definitely clicks in his head when he's climbing. He goes someplace else. Some type of dysfunction for sure. If he hadn't found climbing the guy would be a serial killer.
I also remember being impressed at how little energy he expended during the climb. Zero unnecessary clenching of anything. Efficient. |

I thought he had done this several times before.
ETA: I'm thinking of El Sendero Luminoso which he also made his bitch. Dude is incredible. |

Pfftt, I climbed Half Dome without personal safety gear years ago.

and shit like THIS is why everyone loves Honnlove.
What are you going to do this afternoon?
I’m probably going to hang board. You’re going to go do a hang board workout? I mean, in a bit, yeah. I mean I want to eat some lunch, I want to get in the shade and then I’m probably going to hang board in a bit. I am perfectly warmed up, I just did four hours’ light exercise, you know? A normal person would probably take the afternoon off after they free-soloed El Cap. But I’ve been trying to hang board every other day, and it’s the other day. View Quote |
