Once I realized how big they really are the amount of power they generate is staggering. We might need to start a robotics thread in The Hobby Shop, it's something I've been wanting to get into. Robot Battles is older, just wasn't on TV. A friend of mine has been involved in running them at DragonCon and LibertyCon for decades (possibly to when they started in the early '90's, I'd have to ask him). They generally have smaller weight classes.
ETA: Yep, Kelly is the one who talked DragonCon management into hosting the first Robot Battles in 1991 (using rules written for a similar competition at MileHiCon in 1987, which has been running their "Critter Crunch" ever since, so they're the oldest known, continuous robotic combat competition, started by Bill Llewellyn and the "Denver Mad Scientists Club"). |
