May I also suggest a saying a short prayer before you start reading? Nothing elaborate and flowery and such. Something simple like "Holy Spirit I ask that you open my heart to receive the Word of God today."
If you're right and I'm wrong then you've wasted a breath and a few seconds of time. If I'm right and you're wrong then you've just invited the supreme being to help and guide you in your search. What could go wrong?
