In general it shouldn't be illegal to jump off a rock but I'm pretty sure the National Park System is currently closed to the public, and Zion definitely is (I just looked) which all normal people begrudgingly accepted and changed their plans. I had plans to backpack through some other parks this may and now I'm not going to do that. If law abiding regular people abide by the rules, but this special snowflake gets to sneak in, and then break their other rules, that's not fair to all of the people who got the message and just stayed home. The people sneaking into closed parks are special snowflakes who think the rules don't apply to them. So fuck this dude, he earned a fine. Generally, jumping off of tall objects shouldn't be illegal but when those idiots fuck up that definitely costs tax payers money too, so charging an access fee (just like I pay for back country hiking would be reasonable. |

It's not statist to think this guy is a self-absorbed asshole, who deserved the fine. It's called being an adult and realizing that your actions can have consequences for other people. "But it didn't this time" is the counter-argument of a child. I don't really give a shit about condors, but we are paying god knows what to rehabilitate the fuckers, and this guy obviously doesn't care. I DO care about all the other humans who could be affected if they had needed to scrape his dumb ass off a rock. Hikers and climbers and other users of all kinds pay usage fees. NPS just collected their fee after the fact. ETA: reading his statements, he sounds like he took his licks in stride, but I doubt he'll stop trying to jump in other parks or other places it is already illegal. So I respect the fact that he did it safely and didn't whine about catching a fine, but little else.  |

The current crop of base jumpers normally are attention whores. I used to hang out with a very serious group of base jumpers back in the mid 1980's and quite honestly they didn't film shit or even talk about it outside a small circle friends. In the case of that group it was all about line stretch just prior to landing and they were generally jumping radio towers to make that happen. 100 meter type stuff and S folding their parachute into a paper sack. As for the "victimless crime" crew I'd suggest that if the body was left to rot on a cliff somewhere when the dude fraps in then maybe you're right. That's not the case though as rescue crews will be put in danger and resources expended. A large fine is more than appropriate. Again, like my example above, if you get the urge to BASE jump just use a radio tower. If you bounce no big deal....meat wagon pulls up and loads your body up. $150 max in costs. |

I had a commercial pilot once tell me that it's better for all involved if he didn't ever touch the controls as the plane could take off, fly and land way better via computers than human. I guess they have to get some stick time to keep their hours up but I found it sort of amazing that commercial planes have evolved to that point. |

Normally, a jump is nothing more than a misdemeanor and small fine, but given the park closure and nesting closures, this will be more. But, I doubt this will result in him being banned from parks; that's something that usually only comes up with felony vandalism or property destruction cases. |

National Parks are only "public land" in the sense that the government owns them. The enabling act for the Park Service makes it clear you don't get to do whatever you want inside their boundaries. If he had bothered to stay on BLM land just outside the park boundaries no one would have cared. I've noticed the people who think the Park Service should lighten up are probably the first ones to complain when Chinese tourists walk up next to Old Faithful to take a selfie. |
