If I have to pull out a melee weapon during the zombie apocalypse, I have failed and will probably eat a Gold Dot instead.

It's not the right store configuration.
(I should not have known that. I need to lay of the HF for a while)

ETA: On the other hand, it just might be.

Stanley Fubar or other halligan type tool.
Breaking into stuff for supplies & a hide-out is much more important than busting zombie heads.
Edged weapons are useless for zeds.  A zombie isn't going to bleed out being stabinated or sliced, won't care if it gets an arm or leg lopped off & decapitation just means there's a still bitey zedhead underfoot.

The best melee weapon? A Sherman tank with a mine flail on the front, anything less won't do.

sure they did but not by zombies.

not sure you can train a horse not to get freaked out when grabbed and bitten in multiple places.

for retreat and scouting purposes horses are an excellent.

Blunt clubs if you're untrained.

Bladed/pointed weapons will bind in the zombie without training to recover the blade/spear for another swing or stab immediately, and then you're going down for a bite as they grapple.

Without any training?

Golf club or baseball bat.

I would choose a semi-lightweight mace with shallow spikes so it won't get stuck in skulls.  I would also use a lightweight shield to block and push other zombies off in between melee strikes.

Something similar to this, but probably a little smaller (lighter weight) head:
