United Parcel Service will slash 12,000 jobs and workers who survive the massive layoffs will be ordered to return to the office five days a week, the company said Tuesday. The Atlanta-based firm announced the job cuts after reporting a 31.8% drop in quarterly profit, as e-commerce demand remained subdued and costs jumped from the company’s new contract with the Teamsters union. Yep... you want more, we pay more. Oh wait, now our bottom line sucks so we have to lay you off.

Bringing those employees back to the office will certainly increase e-commerce and turn the ship around.

Amazon and Walmart delivery are eating their lunch.
UPS should have done the contractor model years ago. |

So they're shitcanning people that work there that make absolutely no contribution to the operation of picking up and delivering shit around the world? Cool. Let me know when they start shitcanning operations personnel.

I loaded trucks there in my youth. At Christmas time. Still have nightmares of Harry and David chasing me.
Anywho, UPS works the shit out of employees. Drivers hustle and put in some long days. But $170,000 is crazy money for a blue collar gig that is 100% OJT. |

“and costs jumped from the company’s new contract with the Teamsters union”
Look for the union label! |

I thought about creating a thread just to vent…now I don’t have to
I got something sent to me last week, put in the “mail” on Wednesday for 2 day air. I got a delivery notice I would get it on Friday from an email on Thursday. The package arrived at my local facility (less than 10 miles from my house) Thursday night at 11:59PM. At 6:15 am on Friday I got a notice that my package was in a severe weather delay……. It has been above freezing since last Wed and only one or two days of rain. Package is in the same status as of this moment…... I tried the automated system which was the only option, sent an email and still nothing but crickets. I am now contacting the seller to make sure he gets his upgraded shipping fees returned, I could care less if I get the money but this shit is pathetic. |

I take it the still working union brothers will not take a pay cut to save the other union brothers their jobs?

https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-layoffs January 2024 In the latest round of layoffs, Amazon is laying off less than 5% of its workforce in the Buy with Prime unit. The Buy with Prime program launched in 2022 to equip retailers with fulfillment and delivery services. "We regularly review the structure of our teams and make adjustments based on the needs of the business and, following a recent review, we've made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles on our Buy with Prime team. Buy with Prime is a top priority for Amazon, with strong adoption from merchants and positive feedback from customers, and we will continue investing significant resources in Buy with Prime to build on that momentum. We're grateful to these employees for their contributions, and we're focused on supporting them in their next steps," an Amazon statement said. |

They lowered the standard and started to hire people which had criminal records and drug users. Who didn't see that happening.

UPS is based in Atlanta? I thought their base was Louisville, KY.

Well there were probably that many useless office jobs my company could have cut also .
We had over 450 diversity and inclusion position hiring's world wide making a paycheck |

Knew this was coming the second I saw an article and thought "UPS people make THAT much?".
It would be great if every job paid 6 figures and that this was sustainable. However, that is not real life. Lots of people are going to learn this the hard way. |

Don't worry, this won't affect plans to open the $20 million dollar office in India and hire over 1,000 new "employees"
https://www.business-standard.com/companies/news/shipping-logistics-firm-ups-opens-india-s-first-tech-centre-in-chennai-123082800689_1.html It's a shame most people outside of UPS won't see how this company has changed in the last 25 years since they went public. Greed and ignorance fueled massive growth spending that really has not paid off. I believe it's because the people who did the buying were not committed to growing and improving their purchase. Further, like a big lazy government organization, there were many inside who actively stonewalled or refused to integrate these new acquisitions. Nor did they treat the new acquisition people with any hint of respect for their person or knowledge of the industry. UPS thought they were the king of the jungle and they could simply hide behind the big brown shield. |

A month after Christmas. They are late in the layoffs really.

I was talking to our UPS delivery driver before Christmas and he said they were slow as shit. No runners on the trucks this year.

So the contest is between $200K/yr union UPS drivers and $15/hr Amazon drivers?
Who will win?!? |

My mailman hauls about half the stuff now that UPS used to deliver. Probably hard to compete with a tax-funded, money-losing .gov delivery service.
