So the scientists compiled an image of super massive blackholes in other galaxys

Why didnt they just focus on the milky way, that would seem to be mind boggling easier?

(yes i realise that they are in fact showing the event horizon)

I believe they did, however there is so much matter between us and our black hole that the picture isn't as clear.  Also I think the milky ways black holes outgas jet is pointing nearly directly at us, contributing to the difficulty in seeing it.

The more pertinent question is, why have I yet to see a parody image based on the goatse.cs meme?

Scott Manley explains it very well why:

No, arfcom is as deep into the crazy as I like to go.

I stepped into 4chan a couple of times due to threads here, and quickly regretted it.

I’m a bit... boring like that.

LOL....I'd put more credence in Sasquatch pics than something brought to us by the same crowd that can't figure out if Pluto is a planet or not.

Oh look, we took a potato pic of a black hole.....Where's our funding?

Seems legit.

Isn't it not even a real photo?  It's generated based on radiation data from multiple sources.

The black hole the image is from is so much larger than the milky way black hole that they appear relatively the same size.

Either pluto isn't a planet, or....

We have 23 planets with another likely 20.

It's a false-color image of data at 1.3mm wavelength (230 GHz). We can't "see" thay frequency, so the data was processed to create an image we can interpret. Brighter = higher energy = more photons coming towards us.

The color chosen (orange) is completely arbitrary.

230 GHz (wavelength 1.3mm) on a chart showing where it is in respect to visible light:

230 GHz = 2.3x10E11 Hz (just to the right of the line between microwave and infrared in the above chart)

It's like trying to take a picture of the eye of a hurricane from a plane out on the edge of the storm at the same altitude.

There's too much stuff in the way to see it.

Don't you think it's relevant to point out that we aren't just taking a high-range DSLR, looking through it, and snapping a shot?

Sure, but that was not what was said.
You can't just snap of shot of anything that far away.  If you are trying to infer that the photo is fake, it is not.
If you are saying that it is a compilation of data that was used to form an image to make it into a photo. Yeah, so what?
As long as the data is sound, that is what a photo IS.  While not as simple as the photos we take, it is similar in the final analysis.  Is it using false color? Sure.  But color is simply a construct in our mind to see difference wavelengths.  So it is shifted into a range we can "see."  Again, it doesn't invalidate the photo.  It just means that if you ever find yourself approaching a black hole, it might look different than the photo does.

Too much shit in the way makes for a path with a lot of scattering.

Too much scattering makes for a shitty image.

The path to M87 is much clearer in spite of being much longer, therefor much less scatter.

They also looked at the one at the center of our galaxy.

This one was just the first image to be released... and also likely to be the better of the two images due to it being so much larger in the sky than our comparatively tiny black hole.

here this video explains it.

4 Billion Solar Mass Black Hole in M87 - Event Horizon Telescope

edit... I see someone else also posted the video... it's a good video.

Why is the picture from a DSLR created by combining the data from the photoreceptors scattered on a CCD considered a photo, but the data combined from a bunch of telescopes scattered around the globe not?

try photographing something that is black, in space and 26 whatever thousand lights years away.  Little bits of light, here and there.  And a whole bunch of noise.

Exactly!
Just like CT scans, or MRI images.
Just because they weren't taken within the visible spectrum doesn't mean they aren't 'actual' images.
They are merely 'actual images' that have been re-mapped into a spectrum that we can see in our tiny visual bandwidth.

Id happily shut off the EBT cards in ghettoes of five major cities to fund stuff like this.  And let the cities burn because of it.  They contribute nothing to humanity or scientific advancement.  These projects do.

Yes.  However, its also relevant to point out that the image is not made by artists using an advanced version of microsoft paint like way too many arfcommer posters are proudly proclaiming in complete ignorance.
