The problem is that Black Panther is simply a boring character. Iron Man is cool because he has an armored flying suit that shoots lasers and missiles and stuff. Captain America is just an acrobat melee dude with a cool special shield, but his backstory and boy-scout values set him apart. Thor is a space god who can fly and shoot lightning and has an awesome hammer to smash shit with (wonder if everything looks like a nail to Thor?). Hulk, well, mild mannered science guy that turns into a giant green raging ogre, what more could you ask for. And Spiderman, well c'mon, guy can climb walls, shoot webbing, and gets a spider-sense tingly sensation around his super hot Aunt May Marisa Tomei (like who wouldn't!). But Black Panther? Just a melee combat guy with some cat claws. Yawn. About as boring as Hawkeye or female Jason Bourn....err Black Widow. The fact that the Black Panther character is a black guy doesn't somehow magically make the character more interesting.
My kids want to see it, so I will be going. |

I'm slightly tempted to go see it at the more 'urban' theater in town sometime opening weekend. The audience reactions will likely be more entertaining than the movie. I AM interested in seeing it, but probably won't be in theater unless I do the above. Well-armed, of course. Would probably also wear soft armor under a jacket if I had any. If it sucks just go drive down the audience score. Fuckin rookies. View Quote Review deleted, score adjusted to reflect their reality. If it isn't obvious by now, RT is no longer reliable to get movie quality newer than about a year ago. It's in the same boat as imdb now, controlled by what Hollywood thinks they should say. All it took was threatening to sue them because their bad reviews "lost millions of dollars" that belonged to the studios if people would have went to the movie. Same circular logic as "lost money from pirated movies". Most people that watch pirated movies never go to the theater anyway, others are to re-watch it, and wouldn't pay to see it again, etc. It allows for huge flexibility in tax writeoffs, which is why the .gov cares so much. Now that honest movie reviews (giving a paltry 7 of 10) are 'costing them money' something Must Be Done. |
