So... your plan is to launch an attack and hope that he just sits there and takes it?

As far as plans go, it lacks a little... je ne sais quoi.

He is like Michael Jackson but  instead of rising to fame was born into a religion with a nation state as his followers and instead of building an amusement park and molesting kids he builds nukes and kidnaps Japanese . Consider who the last person to ever tell him "no" might have been and who could try to guide him now. His view of reality just isn't anything near ours and trying to place our precepts into him is pointless. It's not that he is crazy in the way of having a diagnosable illness ,it is that his entire reality is so far removed from ours.

Trade with China only makes up 83% of North Korea's economy as of 2015, and probably more now.

Yep, don't control them, can't control them. It would take maybe a week of China cutting trade with North Korea for North Korea to collapse. They could just stop sending oil and food to North Korea, for instance. But yea, they don't control them...

SEOUL – NK News has obtained exclusive photos of Saturday’s “Victory Day” parade showing close-up
details of North Korea’s military that tell a very different story from
the sterner file photos distributed by international media. The high resolution photos paint a different portrait to the straight-faced, goose-stepping and robotic soldiers normally associated
with North Korean military parades. These images were taken minutes
after the convoy passed the main square, showing the excitement of the
soldiers and adding a more human touch. They also reveal telling clues about the state of some of North Korea’s most advanced weaponry.

NK News has learnt that North Korean officials said that the “nuclear backpacks” seen at Saturday’s
parade contain hazardous materials suits — not miniaturized nuclear
weapons, as some media have suggested.Hazardous suits are impermeable whole-body garments, normally worn as protection during times of radioactive, chemical or biological
contamination.Commentators at Armscontrolwonk.com also speculated that the bags could contain “repackaged DP-5B geiger counters,” a Soviet-era
device used commonly to detect radiation after the Chernobyl nuclear
disaster.

But the bottom line, however, is that there is healthy cause for skepticism about what could be in these bags —
even with close up pictures.“Everyone wants to make news about these, however, what they contain is pure speculation…They could barely contain a mask and protective
overalls. In reality, it is likely that they are simply stuffed with
paper or rags,” said Korean People’s Army (KPA) expert Joseph Bermudez,
Jr, in an email to NK News.“Readers need to understand is that the North Koreans know that we look at every little detail and try to gain intelligence from it. So at
times they do things to ‘mess with our heads,'” Bermudez cautioned.

If we cut trade with China we could destroy them. Do we control them? No. Can we influence them to some degree? Yes. But influence doesn't mean control.

FYI, You're again showing your ignorance of PRC-DPRK relations, NK was actually selling food to China in the form of seafood (which has since stopped, as of 26 days ago).

NK isn't starving because they have no food,  certain North Koreans are starving because the food produced is denied to them because Songun, Military First policy.

We were supposed to attack them or at least have a few precision missiles take out a few weapons factories after they detonated that nuke.

They called our bluff.

They will continue to escalate, provoke, and advance their weapon technologies without ever bombing a US city. They want to be  perceived as a powerful militaristic state and they will keep showboating and walking that line until they are satisfied.

You know Kim is sitting there with a big fucking smug smile on his face. In his mind, he's succeeding at bullying the "bully". He's probably quite satisfied with himself and I bet he wants more. A lot more.

They have radars and SAM systems so if the missile is not stealthy they will theoretically see it above the horizon.

That is one helluva reckless gamble with one million lives, including at least 28,000 Americans.  Our national strategic actions rarely include such bets.

No.

I posted this in one of the other threads.

What I think we're seeing: a race to the finish line.

To get the keys to the nuclear clubhouse, a country needs to demonstrate A) a working nuclear weapon that's B) small & robust enough to be deliverable with C) a working platform (plane, ICBM, SLBM, etc.). If they had a nuke, but nothing to deliver it with, who cares, right? If they have an awesome ICBM, but no nuke to put on it, all they have is a really expensive lawn dart.

All of those things involve testing of the individual components, then testing as a system, to achieve an operational capability.

Lil Kim knows we'd never let him get away with any kind of long-term testing program to get to his goal. So, he's jamming all his final developmental tests into a really short time frame, in an effort to saturate the decision-making processes of his adversaries.

If he gets his tests done quickly enough, one after another, then boom, he's now demonstrated the capability before his adversaries can come up with a response.

He's at first and goal on the 2 yard line. He's just got to do a couple of sprints at the end to make it happen, he's hoping to do that in a blitz before the opposition organizes a good defense.

My bet:  one or two more launches, at least one more nuke test (intel says he's getting ready to do both), then a major announcement on Sept 9 that they have a nuclear capability.  (Sept 9th is their independence day.)

OK, so they get a nuke. What does that do? Eliminate our ability to defend our allies? I think the more likely scenario is that the South Koreans and Japanese slap together a few warheads of their own and next thing you know, every power in Asia is engaged in a thermonuclear Mexican standoff.

Russia doesn't want that, China doesn't want that, India can't want that...but there won't be any stopping South Korea or Japan if he demonstrates a deliverable thermonuclear capability.

How do you explain that when you get home and asked " What did you do over there?".

Yeah I know they probably had other jobs.

That is one helluva reckless gamble with one million lives, including at least 28,000 Americans.  Our national strategic actions rarely include such bets.

Then setup camps in the south. Shut down the city (it will be shut down anyways if it gets shelled). Evacuate everyone to the southern portion and then light up North Korea. Yeah it will cost a lot and take a lot of logistics, but that's the cost of reducing the risk so we can eliminate NK.

I suspect that they like North Korea's aggressive foreign policy. It creates problems for the US that take a significant requirement for military forces and give US-threatening weapons to places like Iran. If China is thinking about invading Taiwan or the South Pacific that's a useful thing to have, and they're not going to be completely committed about turning the Norks into nice boys.

Having a degree of support for NK means the US has less world power.

You want to do some reading on NK strategic missile deployment.
If Seoul gets shelled, that will be the day Kim and his country die.

He would think twice about ending his own life, over a few factories, before deciding to destroy Seoul.

We need to precision strike one of his factories while all our forces are ready to go just in case. Call his bluff.

And that's why we are where we are today
