I know once again that I’m late to the party but this is the best thing I’ve seen on tv in years.
I’ve always had a morbid fascination with this subject including the incident at 3 Mile Island but I am blown away at the way the people over there solved this impossible task. Or at the very least contained it for the short term and eventually a longer term. Hell, I even got a respect for Boris Yeltsin. . I can’t wait to watch the rest of it, politics be damned. I remember years back when my ex wife asked me why I could get into super hero movies. I told her that I didn’t like the idea of make believe demigods demonstrating their abilities simply for entertainment. That it cheapens the concept of what it means to be a hero. The sheer amount of sacrifice to the average random soviet citizen had to go through is difficult to imagine, especially with those that participated. Plenty of heroism took place there.....and as much of a total goat fuck that that was, it could have been hideously worse Chernobyl (2019) | Official Trailer | HBO |

it's nowhere near historically, or even scientifically, accurate. 6/10.

i thought it was great also
Also it runs pretty close with the book Chernobyl. (forgot the author and i've packed it away). that book will keep you up at night. |

Quoted: Support that statement with specifics View Quote Read Midnight in Chernobyl. I, too, thought this was a great series, but then I read the book it is based upon and realized much of the story was completely made up. The primary scientist figure in the series was 100% complicit in the events that led up to the Chernobyl event. Plenty of other reactors had had similar incidents with the same behavior. They make him out to be the "voice of reason" for a "if only we had listened to the scientists" narrative, but his hands were just as dirty as the rest. The whole water explosion scenario is vastly overblown. At the end, I give the series a high rating for drama, but a very low one for accuracy. Read the book. |

The unborn child absorbing radiation from the mothers exposure to her firefighter husband was one such moment. Suggesting the people on the bridge all died from the fallout was bullshit- most everyone survived. OTOH the character of Ulana Komhyuk was artistic liberty and I think necessary for streamlining the story. Overall a very good series. The explanation into how the RBMK failed, as I understand it was spot on. As well as the realization the USSR knew there was a flaw in the design and hid it from everyone, even their own nuke techs operating the reactors. That’s what commies do. It just didn't have the medical/traumatic physical effect that the TV series showed. That's the biggest part. |

There was a video series where someone took a motorcycle trip through the area of Chernobyl many years after the incident. It was like another planet where all life seemed to cease to exist. Very eerie.

There were things they changed to make it a better show but it was still really good and still got most things right. It was good though.

I've read that the mining official guy, whatever his title was, was actually very much a veteran miner himself and that the miners were far more willing. But I also didn't even stay at a holiday inn express last night so take that with a radioactive grain of salt. |

Ok comrade. Any significant examples or just nitpicking? I remember in some early threads about the series some pedantic people on here were complaining they didn't speak with Russian accents. I would think speaking English instead of Russian would be a more glaring inaccuracy. |

Its like life hit the pause button in 1986 over there and now you can see nature is starting to grow and swallow it up and the man made creations are deteriorating. George Carlin was right. The whole water explosion scenario is vastly overblown. At the end, I give the series a high rating for drama, but a very low one for accuracy. Read the book. View Quote Every document has discrepancies from the others, personal accounts and timelines vary some but the show nailed the major causes and events. Did the coal miners really mess up the suit of the minister of mining? Who knows, probably not. There were miners, they did excavate a chamber under the reactor. Was there a risk of massive(megaton) explosion if the coreium hit the bubbler pool..I don't think so but did they think that it could explode at the time? The causes of the accident were accurate. Was there a visible beam of radiation out of the wrecked reactor? Probably not but I wasn't there. Did everyone on the bridge of death later die of radiation sickness? Its disputed. The show reflected the conflicting "truth" that exists even today. Nitpicking. Excellent show that dramatized a highly technical event better than anything I've ever seen. The greatest take away from Chernobyl (show) is the political dysmorphic disorder of its creators. They honestly believed it was a commentary on the Trump administration...completely missing the obvious criticism of socialism and communism. |

I also was stationed in Germany when it happened. Bizarre time for US troops, we didnt know what was going on, we went on full alert with all our rolling armor loaded up and waiting at the front gate to head out.
Later when we stood down the food supply was interrupted, no fresh veggies, milk, eggs or stuff like that. My wife and I watched the show and really enjoyed it. I think it was a given they took a certain artistic freedom in making the show. |
