Kyle lived up the road from me, in Midlothian. the people I've talked with who knew him say the same. I think he was a decent guy. I think the notoriety wasn't good for him, and I think he had a tendency to perhaps embellish a bit in order to foster that notoriety. IMO, it's a lot easier to be a decent guy, and to be regarded as a decent guy, if you don't attract as much attention. Once someone puts you on pedestal, and God forbid, once you start liking being there, you're in for a fall. Not too many people can survive the kind of inspection your entire life and character get once that happens. I'm sure he was a nice guy, good dude, etc. BUT he got the attention because of his embellishment. He sought it out. And embellishment of that kind, specifically for gain, is not a good quality in a person. Really, how different is inflating your kills from other more blatant forms of stolen valor we see? If a Navy guy who swabbed decks all day gets out and starts wearing a trident, we call him a POS poser and wonder why he couldn't have just been proud of his actual service? So when a guy who has everything to be proud of, having actually earned his trident and ghosted people in a bad land, feels the need to 'enhance' his confirmed kills so he can elevate himself above all the other snipers what do we call him? Would his book have sold fewer copies or not been made into a movie if he wasn't the deadliest sniper in US history? If so, then did really deserve for it to becomes a best seller and a movie? And if not, then why embellish? Regardless of your amazing accomplishments, if you then embellish them further you only serve to diminish what you did, not enhance it. |

American Sniper, Lone Survivor, and No Easy Day...
All written by SEALs, all probably stretch reality a tad, and all entertained me. I read No Easy Day in a day, it was probably the most entertaining. |

Just another ARF cluster-FUBAR thread in GD.
Kyle wasn't a perfect person or author, but what he did deserves my respect and the senseless way he died was tragic. Earnhardt's death was a calculated risk and not senseless, or near as tragic (despite his worshipers tears). BTW... you'd think that Kyle was a Kardashian the way some refer to him around here. |
