Rutherford pretty much wins the helmet contest in this picture as well, but nothing screams racing like a Pennzoil paint job.

And Gary B rocking the Menards scheme.

I'm a sucker for Red, White & Blue paint schemes and Sox & Martin had a simple but striking one.  Maybe it's the old Mopar, too.

All of the 80s cigarette sponsored cars and motorcycles were great. This was the best era of racing due to the huge amount of money they and the Japanese could throw into things.

If I had to pick a favorite I’m going Rothmans Honda but Lucky Strike Suzuki and Marlboro Yamahas are equally iconic

Shwantz's Pepsi was the best bike livery.

Senna's Marlboro is very iconic.

I was shocked seeing one in person too. The roof line was like crotch level.

The drivers feet are forward of the front axel and probably don't make for good crash protection.

Gulf 917 is art.

For those unaware, the 917 is smaller than the Porsche 914. Tiny car. Always thought they were bigger.

IIRC the 956 was the same way.  It wasn't until the 962 that the driver's feet were behind the front axle.

The light blue/orange scheme of the Gulf cars is one of the most iconic and easily identifiable color combinations.
I don't think I have seen another scheme that comes close.
Really, who would have through those two colors would look that good together?
View Quote

Certainly, not me.  I thought then - still think today - that it’s the ugliest paint scheme ever put on a race car.  Which is pretty odd since blue and orange are a favorite color combination, just not that wretched “baby” blue.  Tragic, too, because the GT40 is my favorite thing that ever rolled on four wheels. I will concede though, that it made the car stand out from everything else on the track (bletch).

I also recognize that I’m the only person on the planet that feels this way.  I wish it didn’t, but I can’t help it.  If somebody gave me one, I’d roll a coat of baby-shit brown latex on it rather than subject myself to those colors.

That looks like something Lord March would do for Goodwood except he would have had at least five vehicles.

In my mind, the coolest livery has got to be the GT-40 Gulf.  the colors still work well and are instantly recognizable by even people who aren't racing fans.  It's an iconic scheme.  And, damn! It looks amazing on the newest Ford GT.  Felix Sebates has one that moves from delaership to delaership.  I saw it in person and stunning is the word I would use.

The Subaru blue and yellow/gold, are pretty much a classic as well.  They worked very well on old cars and new.  They're near timeless.

787B Renown is cool, and in my top 10, maybe 7.  Different, for sure.

Ivan Stewart's paint scheme is iconic as well.   Memorable, but not the coolest.

I'd have to throw the Alan Kulwicki Hooters car in there because I liked him.  VERY nice guy.  I know someone who dated him before he got married.  Hard working guy.  I have a picture of me in his race car.  It's a damn shame he died in his prime.

Lots of very cool liveries but I have to give it to the Gulf GT-40.  Everyone knows the combination and it still works very well.

My favorite all time:

Favorite Indy 500 winner. Best race finish ever—Johncock and Mears duked it out for 20 laps with Mears gaining a second each lap until he was right on Johncock’s ass. Gordon held him off for the win.

Second favorite Indy winning livery:

Current favorite IMSA car:

Lots of quality choices in this thread!

The Stratos was dead sexy no matter what war paints they wore.

Definitely a tier 1 pedestal car.
