The sky is indeed falling.

40 right now here in the frozen arctic wasteland that is northern mn.
They say it will get cold and snow, in December. Imagine that.

Having your generator ready is really a good idea. I never seem to work on mine till the power is out.
I hope things go well for you op.

Just in case you weren't aware, the upper midwest (IA, MN, WI, probably other states off my radar) will be experiencing wild December weather.

From the National Weather Service in MN:

RGENT - WEATHER MESSAGENational Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN
334 AM CST Wed Dec 15 2021
...POTENTIALLY HISTORIC HIGH WIND EVENT TONIGHT...
.A very powerful low pressure system will track through later today
and this evening. Damaging winds with gusts of 60 to 65 mph are
likely across all of the Upper Mississippi River Valley tonight.
In addition, a line of severe thunderstorms will develop along a
very fast moving cold front early this evening. This line of
thunderstorms could contain gusts in excess of 80 mph and some
embedded tornadoes across southern and eastern Minnesota into
western Wisconsin.

Including the cities of Elk River, Cambridge, Center City,
Blaine, Osceola, Rice Lake, and Ladysmith
334 AM CST Wed Dec 15 2021
...DENSE FOG ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON CST TODAY...
...HIGH WIND WARNING NOW IN EFFECT FROM 9 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 AM
CST THURSDAY...
* WHAT...For the High Wind Warning, southwest winds 30 to 40 mph
with gusts up to 60 mph expected. For the Dense Fog Advisory,
visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
* WHERE...In Wisconsin, Polk, Barron and Rusk Counties. In
Minnesota, Sherburne, Isanti, Chisago and Anoka Counties.
* WHEN...For the High Wind Warning, from 9 PM this evening to 6
AM CST Thursday. For the Dense Fog Advisory, until noon CST
 today.
* IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines.
Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be
difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Hazardous
driving conditions due to low visibility.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Widespread wind damage may also occur with
a line of thunderstorms early this evening. Some wind gusts may
 exceed 80 mph.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around
trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of
your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if
you must drive.
If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of
distance ahead of you.

My particular AO has expected gusts around 65 from the wind, and 80+ from the storms expected to develop. I'll be testing out the generator today, having everything ready to switch over.
This isn't expected to be NEAR the devastation that was just the tornado outbreak, but the expected widespread power outages going into cold/windy weather could prove catastrophic for any houses/businesses not ready for it. The Rat household will be fine so long as our house stands, but I worry more about other folks.

Just a head's up, this is VERY unusual weather for middle December in MN.

Minnesota has never had a tornado in December. Crazy shit.

I'm sure this is all a coincidence though. Massive Tornado outbreak in Kentucky in December.

60 degrees up here in Michigan for a few days. Never seen anything like this. I distinctly remember seeing 10-20 foot high snow drifts that were plowed in late October when I was a kid. That doesn't happen anymore either.

It came through NM late last night and early this morning.  Governor or at least our county doing a state of emergency.  Our little neck of the woods got a bit hammered.  Roofs off, mobile home blown over, trees down.  Not as bad as the poor folks in Kentucky last weekend,
but significant disruptions from the normal.  My ISP is down (may be extended), but the backup stuff is working.  Had a nice morning of coffee and chatting with my neighbors, who I have helped get prepared with backup solar and battery.  So for us it was a good chance to test preps.

A couple of years ago we had that in southern MN. Sleet/rain/snow followed by high winds. Over 250 power poles were snapped off. One pole near me had the top 3/4 stuck upside down in a field over 50 feet away from its origin. We also had blue electrical arcing between the power lines before they snapped.
