I am on the Keto diet and not drinking soda is killing me. I can have diet sodas but what is the current consensus on them? Ok to drink? Gonna give me super cancer?

I'd guess that anything consumed in moderation is not that great of a health risk.
From the dental perspective, I also don't feel the need to get hysterical about sugar-free soft drinks. The main reason I prefer diet drinks is they don't leave a sticky feeling in my mouth; they don't leave a sticky residue upon spillage; and they are not going to be cariogenic (I don't buy into the 'phosphoric acid causing enamel erosion' for several reasons - mainly buffering capacity -strength- and retention time in the mouth) |

Dietitian wife says she would rather have regular coke than that junk they put in diet.
|
|
I avoid diet because I'm thin and the stuff tastes like shit, but I've been hearing for years anecdotal evidence that it's not good for you, and can't even be associated with weight control. |

I'll just drink what I think tastes good. If diabetes or a heart attack kills me early, at least I don't have to suffer with cancer. Lost 2 grandparents to that one-they went SLOW. Third has been diagnosed so if I live long enough it's probably in the cards. |

diet drinks make you eat more because your body is expecting calories

Even so called diet sodas are bad for you.
Artificial sweeteners are chemical crap, primarily aspartame. Also, even diet sodas are full of sodium. I lost a bunch of weight mainly by getting off of Diet Coke. I drank several of the 20 ounce ones every day. |

His testing is part of what they look at to determine if the product is safe for humans...... He wont drink diet ..... |

All soda is bad for you diet or otherwise.
It shouldn't knock you out of keto though. I drink water or unsweet tea. I'm in keto right now. |

Some will lower your ketone count and slow fat mobilization. Some also will spike insulin. Supposedly stevia is gtg.

I thought I read somewhere that some artificial sweeteners actually have an effect of blood sugar.

I've never done a keto diet, but here's how I look at things...
Both diet and regular soda over the long run is bad for you. I mostly drink water and coffee. I keep myself in good enough shape where if I want a Coke every once in a while, I'm gonna go ahead and enjoy a real one. |
|
I've switched to Pepsi because it's aspartame free.
Aspartame makes my heart skip a little and feel weird. I don't think any of that stuff is good for you, but I like to have some everyday for the caffeine. |

I used to drink Diet Mt Dew while low carbing. I gave up diet sodas when I went Paleo.
Lost an additional 30 lbs and my fasting blood sugar test declined by 20+ points. YMMV. |

The Diet drinks are worse for you than the ones with HFCS in them. I stopped all sodas and just drink tea and water now. Don't really miss the cokes at all.

I'm on the 8th day of the Whole30 diet and I miss soda too. Grapefruit juice and club soda makes a halfass decent mountain dew substitute, but I'm biting the bullet and sticking with black coffee in the morning and water at all other times.

Like with anything - moderation. View Quote Not for the OP. No sugar-- not even in moderation. However, once you're in ketosis, an occasional diet soda won't kill you. An occasional REAL soda with sugar will knock you out of keto. There is some indication that diet sodas can get an insulin reaction-- which is what KETO folks are trying to avoid. However, through trial and error I have found that a diet soda won't do much damage. However, the chemicals are really unnatural, and definitely not good for you. But still better than an insulin spike that knocks you out of ketosis for 2 days, and reignites all the cravings, which you then have to fight. Again. |

Third has been diagnosed so if I live long enough it's probably in the cards. "experts" didn't change their mind. Pseudo scientists, interested in pursuing grants over truth, got sucked into the vortex where, in the absence of any evidence, a "consensus" developed that dietary cholesterol led to high blood cholesterol readings. It was all total bunk. The past 40 years have been a grand experiment that failed. If your metabolism holds up against the onslaught of decades of deluge, consuming carbs in a way humans were never expected to, then you'll be okay. For most of us, our limit-- the point where carb intolerance and insulin resistance tip us into the world of high blood sugar and diabetes-- will be reached in our lifetime. I reached mine-- keto saved me. Good for the OP! He's asking the right questions. If you listen to the answers you might save yourself a lot of health heartbreak. |

diet drinks make you eat more because your body is expecting calories View Quote Not calories---- FAT. Your body is expecting fat. When it doesn't get healthy natural dietary fat, it thinks it's still hungry. Like the whole Chinese Food thing, where you're hungry again an hour later. 1977; the year of the food pyramid. And the year this whole stupid epidemic started. Low fat/low cholesterol diets have ruined the lives of millions of Americans== TENS of millions. If yours works for you, great. KETO works, and probably should work for almost everyone. |

Anyone who eats the SAD standard American Diet is at risk for insulin resistance. KETO is good for almost everyone; it becomes essential for insulin resistant adults who want to stay off meds. |

OTOH if you're 13yo, skinny as a rail and otherwise healthy, a real Coke's biggest danger is you'll get addicted and become a fat 15yo. |
