such bullshit, if there wasn't enough reason to hate IL anymore than we already do.
https://www.kwqc.com/content/news/Dealerships-warning-Illinois-residents-about-new-tax-on-trade-in-vehicles-565132082.html Moline, Ill. (KWQC) - Dealerships say now is the time to trade in your vehicle if you’re an Illinois resident and want to trade in your used car. Green Family Hyundai in Moline explained what the new tax on trade-in vehicles is about. (KWQC) According to Illinois Policy, Illinois residents will be charged 6.25% in tax credit on their trade-in vehicle starting on January 1, 2020. "They're going to get a rude awakening on January 1st that their taxes are going to be a lot higher,” said Chad Dresing, Green Chevrolet General Manager. “So we're trying to get the word out there before so people know." This trade-in credit that will be taxed is an additional tax on top of the one Illinoisans are already paying for the price difference between their new and used cars. "If you're buying a $30,000 car and trading in a $20,000 car. -- you used to get taxed on that $10,000 difference. Now you will be taxed on the $20,000." In other words, for every $10,000 your trade-in vehicle is worth your trade-in credit will be taxed $625. "It's seen as one of those taxes that's only going to affect wealthy people because their trades are worth more money,” said Dresing. “But you'd probably be surprised if you saw how many vehicles we trade for that are worth more than $10,000." Dresing said it's not a tax Illinois residents can avoid by crossing the river. "You’re going to pay tax based on where you live. A lot of people think they'll just go to Iowa and buy their car but you're going to get the same tax over in Iowa.” He said it’s not going to affect Iowa residents who come to Illinois to buy a car either. Dresing said Illinois dealerships could be affected by this additional tax as well. "We are worried about it. People are going to have to buy cars eventually no matter so I don't think it's going to completely stop business,” he said. “I think we will see people who trade a lot will extend their trade cycles out longer." I had an office in Tinley Park.
Between code enforcement on the building and taxes, they forced us out of the state. |

We tax you on the money you make at your job to buy the vehicle.
We tax you when you use the money you were taxed to buy a vehicle. We tax you to license the vehicle that you were taxed twice over now. We tax you to use the highway system for the vehicle that you were taxed over 3? times now. We tax you for the gasoline the you've been taxed 4? or 5? times over to use. We now tax you when your vehicle is worn out and you trade it in on a new vehicle, which you will be taxed on. Illinois is still deep in the red. Land of Lincoln! |

Good for their stupid residents who voted for shit like that by electing shit bag pols.
No sympathy for people who stay in places like that. |

I wonder if they could beat the tax by buying/trading in Indiana?
|
|
Are their car tags a flat rate, or based on the worth of the vehicle?

It is sad that the 120 year old family farm is in that state. The way it is going the taxes are going to end up costing more than the income received from renting out all the farmland and buildings.

What a horrible state. It seems like the only way to deal with that if one had to live there is to keep a vehicle until it has little to no value. Something I would think the dealers would not like. I can't see how that is even legal and hope it gets challenged in court.

It simply amazing me with how that state come sup with new ways to tax people. I'm guessing within 5 years they'll figure out a way to tax the people fleeing that shithole of a state. |

So now if a person trades a 20,000 dollar car on a 30,000 car they pay tax on the 10,000 difference ? Hell Mi has always paid tax on the whole sale then charges tax yearly on the same car .

And they wonder why people are moving out of the PSSI(people‘a socialist state of Illinois)

Wait until the Georgia republicans find out they can add taxes

Another attack on the middle class by the political elite...

They're so hurting for revenue that they can't even try to make it subtle anymore.
Every time I visit the south Chiraq burbs anymore, it seems there's a new video gaming or pot shop in every little strip mall I drive past. In Crestwood and Midlothian it seems like it's every 3rd storefront. By the end of Pricksker's term, I won't be surprised if they have video poker in arcades and day care centers... yet somehow the pension hole will be worse. |

Greedy dumbass democrats, you can't squeeze any more blood or water out of the millstone around the taxpayers' neck.
Failed state, just like NY and CA, they're walking dead and haven't realized it yet. In the next decade as the pension bubble implodes it will really get ugly. |

There's a Z06 I have been looking at in IL but I think I'll pass.

In Georgia they changed the law 8-10 years ago on car sales. Prior to the law change, you could buy a used car from an individual and you didn't have to pay sales tax at all. There was a huge market for used cars sold by individuals.
The new law in Georgia is you pay a tax when you get your car tag. So it doesn't matter how or where you buy your car, when you get the tag transferred, you pay the 7% tax. |
