Like I posted yesterday, we go on these types of calls several times a week.
I had one on Thursday; for a minor child.
Told the parent that the kid hadn't said anything to me that would allow me to take him in for an eval under mental health law.
Parent still insisted that she wanted the kid evaluated. Well, she as a parent can take the kid into the ER on her own and ask for an eval...but she was too scared of her 11 year old kid to transport on her own. So I wound up transporting the kid through rush hour traffic and meeting Mom at the ER an hour later after she made it through the same traffic I'd gone through just to be able to wrap the call up......

Exactly. Welfare checks for the most part SHOULD go like you and others have suggested - i.e. "You want to kill yourself? No? Bye."

In those situations where someone isn't ok, the cop may need to take them in to the ER. Obviously some of these unstable folks get pissed and show their ass, which can sometimes result in them getting hurt. This happens, but in the majority of cases it's because the unstable person is acting irrationally.

Are there JBTs who sometimes act inappropriately? Sure. But there are 2 sides to every story and we have to keep that in mind.

It's getting like Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union where folks in the health care professions keep ratting out people that seek help. There is no reason for the cops knocking on your door. Too many folks getting caught-up in the "what-if' , "what might happen", and "if you see something, say something" BS.

I can see this pratice growing to the point if you look at some fucking .gov or health care worker cross-eyed they are going to call the cops on you. Give it time, it will be worse than some ex-wife claiming you did something "threatening" and John Law comes for you and your guns.

Best just to wrestle with your own demons.

Some states make them do it. Here in FL cops are required by law to evaluate and must take someone who meets criteria for treatment. There is immunity from liability if you take someone but liability if you don't. And a shitload of crazies.

Most of the welfare check requests don't come from people in the medical fields. THEY can refer people on their own to a psych eval. In our state thats called a 9.45 order.
What we in LE do is called a 9.41 order, and usually the caller is some concerned friend or relative who had a recent conversation with the person, or saw an unusual post on the persons Facebook, etc.

The reality is that the general public is more sensitized to incidents where friends and family ignored the warning signs of depression/ suicidal ideation and the ill person later killed themselves.
So they err on the side of caution in calling us to check on someone. Not sure thats as bad a thing as you want to portray it. Sometime I wish they'd pile in their car and drive across ton to check on their friend/ relative themselves, but that's pretty typical of society looking to LE for solutions to more things than it used to do.

Lotto tickets are expensive in the radius you mention, so not happening

Haha! I am a badass! No, but seriously... I am not an angry person or a fighter, in fact quite the opposite. All I'm saying is that I am completely confident in my ability to defend myself and my loved ones. I have always been a protective person and the girl is my world. If I was to see someone harm her like that I feel like I wouldn't be able to contain myself and think rationally. I mean, wouldn't you? It's not "assaulting your wife" when the psycho chick is physically resisting lawful actions by the officer. If some guy, cop or not, just walks up and assaults your wife that's a different story. But not what we are talking about here.

You are right, that is a different story. My initial comment was made with the thought of a scenario where the officer was in the wrong. Granted my comment was troll worthy, I still stand by it. Cops are human and not supermen, nor perfect and they have all of the same problems the rest of us do. They are in a position of power and there will always be those out there that abuse it. Cops are not always in the right. Its also different if the woman was detained, handcuffed and in the car, she still has the right not to be physically harmed by a cop no matter how psycho she may be. Who are any of you to say for sure. None of us were there. Its he said, she said. Again, no one wants to see a loved one hurt, by any means, no matter how psycho they are. My comment was a generalization made with the fact that if a situation like that arose, and I was in the right, I feel I wouldn't be able to stand there and watch. If I was in the right. Not necessarily a cop arresting my girl, but any kind of confrontation with anyone. I'm not going to attack some cop if he is doing his job properly. If she attacked a cop and they were just defending themselves then that really is a different situation.

You are exactly right. Sometimes though certain force isn't necessary. I worked in a mental institution for over 6 years and I was attacked by real psychos on a regular basis. I have countless scars that reflect this. I have been attacked with and had thrown at me almost anything you can think of, including bodily fluid. I still had to handle myself with professionalism and no matter what was happening to me, I couldn't just outright physically harm them, especially when they were restrained and no matter what they were saying or yelling at me. I have heard every insult in the book and then some, so I understand how frustrating this kind of situation can be.

That's the idea behind tasers. But the "without her getting hurt" requires her to not do something stupid. Folks who are struggling against the cops often twist themselves just the wrong way and they take an unintended fall or bounce off a fender, or twist hard enough to break their own arm. That's especially true with the "90 lb female" putting up a fight. She can put forth more force than her own body can handle.

Its entirely possible that the woman in the article threw her own feet/legs out from under herself as she struggled, and she fell as gravity rules applied. We will see what the follow up info on this incident shows.

Which is pretty much my point earlier in the thread. Just as with shitbags getting arrested, sometimes normal folks who are otherwise incapacitated at the time due to an acute psych issue or drugs/alcohol do stupid irrational stuff. Cops & nurses see this all the time and understand it; many others don't. Hearing from the person days later when they've calmed down, sobered up and aren't all belligerent can show a far different story.

So what happens to the cops when this welfare meth head kills one of her kids and stabs her old man?  She could have just played along said everything's fine and the cops would be on to the next call instead she starts acting like a crazy bitch.

Umm get sent back out to the scene and arrest her? Why would something happen to the cops? Cops aren't head doctors.

Some states make them do it. Here in FL cops are required by law to evaluate and must take someone who meets criteria for treatment. There is immunity from liability if you take someone but liability if you don't. And a shitload of crazies.

Yeah we go out and talk to them but if they're talking normal, not showing any crazy signs and say they're not going to harm themselves or others and there is no other physical evidence then we can't make them go see a Doc.

There are at least three elements to that story, from every angle,  that confirm to me that America is doomed

This is why every officer should have a camera on their person. I am against cameras as a rule, but when they are forced to wear them this kinda shit wont happen..

I read the other day that there was a 60% drop in the use of force when the police have to wear a camera on duty. this might be one of them cases.
