New American when I want to deeply consider the message
King James when I want poetry Vulgate when I want to practice Latin |
Yes everyday - KJV
A great online site is www.kingjamesbibleonline.org has a great Audio feature as well. |
James Moffet version, he translated directly from the ancient Greek as much as possble and as literally as possible.
New King James Version for personal study.
ESV at church because my pastor preaches out of it. |
ESV but regularly refer to the extensive translation notes in the New English Translation (NET).
I do read my Bible(s).
In several versions to try to understand the meaning full, since I don't read Aramaic or Greek. Not criticizing OP but I've always found Douy-Rheims elegant but obscure. And i don't read Latin well enough to read the Vulgate. So for me it's NIV, Revised Standard, KJV, New American and New Jerusalem Bibles. Different translation wording provides different sides to the same coin. |
English Standard Version. I really like that version.
I've used King James, New King James, NIV, and NASB in the past. |
King James version for me.
There's an app called e-Sword that's excellent. You can download concordances, versions of the Bible, commentaries, etc. on the computer. It's free, but you can donate if you like. There's an Android app called mySword that's decent. |
Amplified version as it really brings out the full-text meanings which I find valuable.
I grew up with the King James. When I married MrsFlyingGorilla I switched to the NIV that she had used in college at Moody Bible Institute. Recently I've bought a new King James since that is what they now use at church instead of the NIV.

CEB for my simple mind to read
KJV is what I set for myself as my official Bible (this is the one I record my important dates in) Geneva I use for referencing how the Bible should be used rulers I need to pick up a Founders Bible And my Bakers Bible Handbook which shows where God and Science work hand in hand Assyrian King List Babylonian King List Israelite and Judahite kings are linked together Assyrian scribe records a solar eclipses during a eponyms year. Modern astronomers can calculate exactly when the solar eclipse occurred June 15, 763 BC. Using that firm date scholars can determine the accurate dates for most of the Assyrian history. and my KJV audio book with Darth Vader narrating |
Grew up with the Douay-Rheims (Red Letter) Catholic Bible.
Currently have the King James. |
I'm surprised this hasn't devolved into a flame war between the Textus Receptus and Nestle-Aland camps.
New American Bible.
It has the books that the Protestants deleted when they invented their churches. |
I like translations based on the Septuagint for the old testament and Text Receptus for new testament. I cross check them regularly with the tools available today. I also use the Apocrypha for historical/literature context of the writers of the new testament.
ETA: Thinking of picking up a copy of the Orthodox Study Bible |
Quoted: I read the Douay Rheims version Bible. View Quote I've only ever read most of the classic Roman Catholic version as well as a shit ton of stuff from George Fox. There's too many sub versions for me to even really care about honestly. |
To answer the first question - No, at least not with any regularity anymore.
I grew up on NIV, but kind of grew to appreciate and even prefer KJV as I got older. It's beautifully written. I'm probably an old soul. For a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Christianity, I'm more content these days to defer to the more scholarly and learned among us who study it for a living. |
Bible Gateway Great resource for looking up passages in any version you care to.
I read all the major monotheistic texts. For the Bible, either the Greek NT or NKJV.
I prefer the Swedish translation of 1917, but the 1541 version is a hoot to read.
NIV Study Bible and I'm starting to like the Evangelical Heritage Version. Many times I find it closer to literal Greek but still reads really.
If the Bible is the word of God shouldn't there only be one version?
Quoted: If the Bible is the word of God shouldn't there only be one version? View Quote While you're at it, remember that the US Constitution was written in reasonably modern and plain English, and that 10 people have 11 different opinions on what it really means. Anyhoo, good luck! |

I used NASB (New American Standard) for years for reading and study. My wife used ESV (English Standard Version), which is very similar to NASB.
About six months ago I switched over to the classic Amplified - I really enjoy it. Classic version I am referring to was last printed in 1987. Anything after that has been adulterated. You cannot find this version except in used bookstores, Goodwill, eBay, etc. It is worth the trouble. |
I try to read the Bible daily, or at least a verse or two.
My go to translations : KJV & NIV. |
Quoted: NIV for general reading. NASB for a bit deeper study. Also: https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/266317/4B64EAD8-C008-499F-B00A-4EB9360405C7-1416451.jpg View Quote ![]() |
