Even setting that aside, most masters were not sadistic torture fanatics (though surely they did exist), why would you want to damage your agricultural equipment without reason?
You own it forever, so you'd be motivated to keep said equipment in good condition to maximize its production and your profit (ROI)
It would be like getting pissed at your new International Harvester and then bashing out the windshield and slashing the tires.
With that said, I'm sure life in Africa caught in constant tribal warfare wasn't a great existence either, especially after your tribe lost the war, so the choices would probably be slavery, or death.
