My dad found a sporterized 1903 in his parents house after his dad died and mother moved into assisted living.

I've been meaning to get the proper stock for it, but haven't gotten around to it.

Bubba'd WWI and WWII surplus rifles.  1903 and 1917's are the worst.

My dad picked upped a 1917 sporterized years back on the cheap, but the previous owner cut off the rear sights, installed target sites, removed the original front sight and put in a hunting style stock.

Beyond bringing it back to original form.

I always chuckle when I see that.  It took a lot of effort to come up with that AKSKSAR - M1647A1M4 Mod 87.   But it does have that extra thumb safety on it.

I've got one, too. Berthier Artillery Musketoon.

Mine's made by Ets. Continsouza, which was a maker of movie projectors before (and after) the war.

It's also one of my least favorite milsurps to shoot. Just brutal with surplus Balle N.

My MAS 49/56 rocks.

I have the original M16, says so right on the side.
A MAS 1916 carbine.

Going from memory; forgive me for spelling.

Manufacture d' Arms de Sainte Etienne.

The worst kicking military arm I have ever fired.
She's a beast.

Remington actually marketed a sporting rifle based on the 1917 rifle - pretty much modified as you described.  They called it the Model 30.

I have a couple of sporter M1917s - one has the original rear sight ears, but the barrel was shortened a few inches to just above the ord mark and date - they both are very good hunting rifles.

My 1910 Ross is an extremely accurate rifle. The whole "bolt in the forehead thing" has been grossly exagerated.

No, it has not been exaggerated.  I have a M10 (NOT the military rifle) in 280 Ross.  If you assemble the bolt incorrectly, the only thing holding the bolt in is the sear.  Scary as hell, and it's reputation is deserved.

I always check, double check, and triple check the bolt head rotates as I close the bolt every time I pick it up.

Gotta vent - it seems all the cool kids are using 375 Ruger brass to make 280 Ross brass.  That brass is heavy as all hell, and you lose about 6 grains of powder capacity over using normal .532 head size magnum brass like 300 Winchester.  It will also break sizing dies, which is why I made a sizing die from 1.5" 4140 to fit a Rockchucker with the bushing removed.

Not that they make me cringe but I am not a fan of the Smith hand cannons.

Those super short barrel SA XDs with the mile long magazine extension every Bubba puts on them.
