The 2.2 Chrysler L bodies (Omni/Horizon) were zippy. I had an 81 Plymouth Horizon TC3 2.2 Turismo (that was the name) 4 speed that was not horrible, and I traded it in for an 85 2.2 turbo Charger 5 speed, which was a phenomenal piece of shit, but when it felt like running it was an absolute blast.
Cop magnet:  Not mine. Mine crapped out in 1989, sat in the driveway until 95, when it was scrapped. |

My grandfather was an engineer at Chrysler in the late 70’s, early 80’s. He said that it was bad form to pull into the employee parking lot driving anything other than a Chrysler product. Everyone really wanted to drive something else.

Some good reading here - a R&T comparison test of five $3500 GT's in 1971. Datsun 240Z, Fiat 124, Opel GT, MGB GT, Triumph GT6.
R&T Article - click and magnify to read the pages. In the thread on the Plymouth Fury for sale, one poster noted that road test data of the time indicated it was a dog with a 16 sec quarter. Well, might want to look at the 240 in this test for comparison. It was the hotrod of the group and ran a full second slower than that Fury with a 17.1 second quarter! |

My best friend from childhood had an early '80s VW Rabbit(?) with a Siracco engine. Damn thing had electrical issues and the sunroof leaked like a sieve, but it ran like a bat out of hell.
Eventually it caught fire and burnt up. On another note, I tested out a 1986 Mustang SVO, which essentially served as a test bed for new tech: 2.3L 4cyl intercooled turbo with four wheel disc brakes and independent suspension all the way around. Damn thing was an incredible thrill ride. I almost pissed my pants wringing that car out. |

My first car in 1986 was a '76 olds starfire . It was black with cosworth rims and louvers on back hatch . 231 Buick v6 with 4-spd manual . That was my fun car . My only complaint was the power steering was a bit touchy

Opel GT
V8 Monza and Starfire Honda N600 was fun, but not fast. Dodge Colt Turbo. Do Meyer Manx and Bradley GT count? Interesting mention of the X11. A friend of mine had one. I had an Iron Duke 4sp with F41 suspension option (I think the tires were 205/60R13, or maybe R14). Would do a wheelie (enough to see air under the tires according to a friend) if I popped the clutch in reverse. Went around corners almost as good as my Saab 99EMS. Oh, yeah, Saab EMS and Turbo. |
