Former ace Navy pilot ID’d as hero who landed damaged Southwest flight: report

Hmmmm.  Not taking away from what she did to save that flight, but "ace" has a very specific meaning among and about pilots and I don't it is being used accurately here.

Gimme a break. Do you think SHE had anything to do with the headline?  Obviously not.

I'm sure if you asked her, she'd agree that the term "ace" probably isn't applicable.

Anyway, good for her for doing her job well.  She saved a lot of lives.

Ace?

She has 5 air to air kills?

She kept calm, landed the plane and was genuinely concerned about the passengers.

I bet if you ask the passengers, she was an ace yesterday.

What’s makes this event even more amazing, but I guess it’s the norm for airliners these days, is that apparently she was the only pilot in the crew.

Imagine an inflight emergency like this and you have to do everything all by yourself; good thing she was formerly an F-18 pilot so she was used to being the only pilot onboard.

I thought it was pretty standard throughout the industry to have (at least) two pilots in the cockpit but I guess it would save some $ to have only one pilot/aircraft.

I never said anything bad about her, and did commend her actions.  I was pointing out, as an earlier poster also did, how ignorant our press is.  And that is sad, since the vast majority of people get their "facts" there.

No, the press is retarded. To the passengers, she is a damn good pilot who saved there ass, but the US hasn’t had any aces since Vietnam.

True.

This. I can see why genuine bonafide fighter pilot badasses would get bent out of shape over it, but calm your fucking panties. I listened to the inflight communication with ATC and she was cool as a cucumber with an engine explosion and decompression at cruising altitude. Thats the kind of person I want flying if I'm onboard, and thats what was intended.

No doubt
granted real life isn't a simulator , I am sure this is something she has trained for many times
guessing she just feels like she did her job and the attention is uncomfortable

What makes this lady a hero? In my opinion, it is the media coverage, because with out that, we would not know of her actions. So we should be congratulating the media for their courageous reporting of this hero.

Are you still on about this?

That's the great thing about being the Captain. You get the credit and the risk.

USS Tang had a crew of about 80, but only O'Kane got the MoH. Jeff Skiles did not get a movie headline. And so on.
