Germans had some Damn fine looking machines.
I always wondered how well they worked off road and how hard they are to steer... |
|
what was the point of them? any advantage to have wheels on the front as opposed to just having tracks?

I wonder how well it would compare to one of our M113 APC's. Probably pretty well I bet.

The Krauts loved those things and they do look cool. They're just not that practical and very few armies field them in the modern era.

I bet maintenance on the road wheels would suck. Having to remove two wheels to access the rear one seems like a lot of extra work.

I started looking for this pic on my external hard drive 20 minutes ago. I couldn't remember what it said, so I just went through old saved pics. Holy fuck there are some goodies in there from over the years. |

That is what I understand as well. Ours were better. Theirs didn’t have front wheel drive. Ours did. And was more powerful. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

They drove/rode great from what I read, better than ours, but ours were much easier to build. They all burn the same on the battlefield.

View Quote Break the inner wheel and you have an unnecessarily complicated repair job. German engineers love to over complicate things. |

I've driven a fully converted Czech OT-210 to SdzKfz251 specs. Steering wheel is kinda weird, angled downward from top of the steering wheel closest to the driver angled forward and towards driver's feet, so all u really can grab is 10 to 2 o'clock.

I think the point of wheels was the wheels steered; no complicated steering of the tracks. The benefit of the tracks was they lowered ground pressure so the vehicle didn't sink in the mud and get stuck like a fully-wheeled vehicle would.

Germany had hundreds of thousands of Tabun loaded bombs stored in bunkers in the black forest that they never resorted to using. Had they, the outcome would have likely been quite different. Thank God we had God and the Soviets on our side. View Quote |
