Not sure why Dalton didn't do more.

What?

Dalton’s first movie, The Living Daylights, was one of the best Bond movies.

His second one, License to Kill, was so bad I thought it might have killed the franchise. Not his fault, but that’s probably why he didn’t do more.

Wrong.jpg.
The Living Daylights was ok, but LTK is top 5 Bond movies.
1. Goldfinger
2. From Russia
3. Dr. No
4. LTK
5. Goldeneye

Luckily we can all still have opinions that differ. At least for now.

Brosnan’s Bond films had the challenge of competing against the era of Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and other action oriented films.  Brosnan was more commando than gentleman spy and it didn’t work that well.  I liked Dalton and The Living Daylights was good except that (not to make a political analogy) it spent too long a time In Afghanistan.

Not really. Those were 80's movies. Goldeneye didn't come out till 95. His movies suffered from the end of the Cold War Era and shitty writers.
Dalton had to compete against those movies with TLD in 87 and LTK in 89.
I think Dalton gets a bad rap as a lot of people were used to the goofy Moore era and Dalton was going back to more of a Connery style.

I do not think that any of them were bad James Bond.  I grew up in the 70's and 80's.  My ranking if as follows:

Connery

Moore

Craig

Brosnan

Dalton

Lazenby

Moore was offered the role first IIRC, before Connery, but turned it down as he was still filming The Saint.

I think you could kinda say the same about Brosnan. It's hard to tell how he would have done in a classic Bond role, because he got crappy 90's action writers.  Someone made the comment that it competed with 80's action movies; it was as much competing with 90's blockbusters like Independence Day. Cheesy one liners, massive CGI explosions.

If I ever cross over into a parallel universe I hope that it is one where Sam Neill played Bond.

Also, hopefully, Matt Helm movies were not made by Dean Martin.

Been a few years since I've seen it, but I remember it being darker than Moore's bond movies. I mean not Craig dark, but not goofy like Moore.

Generally speaking I think the Craig movies are better movies (Quantum sucked, didnt see the last one). Brosnan was my favorite Bond, even though the movies were 90s action. The ones previous were WAY too campy for my tastes.

54 here. I have seen every Bond movie since For Your Eyes Only in the theater. Growing up I watched the previous ones on TV.

For me it’s:

1. Toss up between classic Connery and more realistic Craig.

2. Toss up between Dalton and Brosnan. Both had great first films and then….. Meh.

3. Moore. Much more a product of his times, most of his films have not aged well.

4. Lazenby. Who?

I recently watched all the bond movies in order. Moore is my favorite bond, he’s not the best but I found the goofy one liners extremely entertaining. Can’t recall the name but the pimp movie was hilarious.

Lazenby I actually thought was excellent, and wish he had stuck around to do more.

Sean Connery is Bond, and is the best by default.

I thought dalton was towards the bottom, if not the absolute worst.

I never liked Craig, he never had the Bond look. The only good movie from his was casino royale and it had nothing to do with his acting. Too serious, no humor, and never really seemed to have the charm/suave

Brosnan comes in somewhere in the middle. Likely could have been much better if he didn’t get stuck with that set of movies.

False.

Tomorrow Never Dies is the best Pierce film, and one of the top 5-10 Bond films ever made. I'd say its the best post-Connery Bond, hitting every aspect of a perfect Bond movie.

Unlike most of the movies, every single gadget in TND was possible to produce, and would work awesome. It also introduced the P99 as the PPK replacement.

1. From Russia with Love
2. Goldfinger
3. Tomorrow Never Dies
4. Skyfall
5. You Only Live Twice
6. Goldeneye
7. Casino Royale
8. License to Kill
9. The Man with the Golden Gun
10. Free spot

....

The problem with the Bond franchise is that it's super uneven. Every actor seemed to get 1/2 good movies and 1/2 shit plots.

I mean you are not wrong, but why you no like Wayne Newton?

I will give Tomorrow Never Dies credit for having a great opening scene. Right there with Goldeneye, problem though was the rest of the movie. Carvers henchman was too
View Quote

I love Wayne Newton.  He's one of the best parts of Fallout: New Vegas.  Even if you could find and kill Wayne, I wouldn't.  Cf Three-Dog...

But he's wasted in this movie.  The pacing sucks, Davi is acting like he's completely bored with the whole thing, and Carey Lowell just can't sell it as "the woman who puts Bond in his place."  Talisa Soto was HAF though.  Just to prosaic a theme.  And yeah, Daylights is, at the end, about drug-running too, but I like it more.  Maybe it's the snow?

Totally faggy henchmen don't kill the mood for me.  I forget the Eurotrash who Christatos employed in For Your Eyes Only, but that guy was this side of having Right Said Fred hanging out the back of him...and that's the best Moore Bond movie of them all, IMHO.

Though each have their moments.  My God, did they try to push the envelope on stunts back then.  Longest boat jump? Yep.  Longest car spiral jump?  Uh-huh.  And so on.

I have an unusual fixation on Tomorrow Never Dies, as I think its tragically underrated.

Theres a lot of strengths to TND. In no particular order:

-Never a dull moment - entire movie is action / plot packed
-Multiple locations/ countries on land/car/motorcycle/plane/parachute/underwater/boat/warship/jet
-Best modern Bond Car, that is extensively utilized
-Bond Babe actually a fellow secret agent from a rival service (Chinese MSS) with her own gadgets
-One of the best Bond villains with a believable evil plan (Billionaire manipulating a war to break out in the South China Sea...seems all too relevant)
-Pierce is a Ruthless but Fun Bond. One moment he's making puns and banging chicks...and then he's executing people in revenge and stabbing henchman in the heart.

I could go on, theres a ton there.

But if you watch Tomorrow Never Dies then Goldeneye, TND is the much more exciting and Bondy movie. Goldeneye is full of dead/dull moments that are interspersed with a few wonderful scenes.

And TND smokes most of the Craig movies, and every Dalton or Moore film.
