Tag. Concorde is/was awesome.

Closest I got was watching one taxi a few times at Dulles with the nose down.

I've been on a Concord but never flown on one.  I was surprised how narrow the plane really is.

Such an awesome aircraft. For me, the definition of opulence. Was sad to see it retire, but it was time.

My father did. Someone else was paying for it. He said it was cramped inside and uncomfortable compared to a widebody jet, and the cabin service wasn’t great. Apparently all of the old, ate up stews would bid on those flights because the BA unions rules gave them credit/pay for a full 6 hour trans-Atlantic flight despite it take 3 hours.

There is one on loan to the Boeing Museum in Seattle, you can go onboard. It is a bit clausterphobic compared to a regular jetliner. Like somebody took a Gulfstream cabin and made it really long.

Never flew on it, but a relative of mine flew the test planes and is the only American to ever pilot a British Concorde.

I know people who did. A few TWA pilots had to deadhead to London or Paris.

They said it was cramped, noisy, a bit stuffy/warm and rattled like Fred Sanford’s truck on takeoff and landing.

But the service was amazing and it was just plain awesome.

I remember being in line behind them at JFK and the noise was incredible. Basically two F-4’s departing with full burners.

Really steep climb out.

How much more was a ticket for the Concord compared to peasant travel?

A friend of mine was booked on a first class flight from London to NY. While waiting in the lounge, he was asked if he would be interested in a free upgrade to Concorde. He said it was a very cool experience all around.

I was at the end of the runway at OshKosh, as close as anyone was allowed to be when it fired up it’s engines for takeoff. That was by far the loudest and most impressive sound I’ve ever hear.

It was $10K one way when my dad flew in the mid-90s. So probably 10x or more than flying as a prole on a 747.

Wife’s parents flew to Paris and back on it.  Still have some of the memorabilia (book matches, napkins etc). I’m sure he enjoyed it as he was a race car fan and went to Indy every year.

The Concord on display in Seattle has the seating area closed off with plexiglass. So it feels even more cramped.

At this stage in my life, I would sit down with Fitz and convince him to write an autobiography about his career in aviation.  But he passed awhile back.  He used to tell me some interesting stories.  He flew around 250 airframes over his career.  Chief test pilot on the Valkyrie, worked the Oxcart program with CIA, and Captained the 747 that used to carry the space shuttle before it was landed in FL.  He has the record for highest altitude with greatest payload, too.  He flew about everything from the Cessna 150 to the C5; a true aviation pioneer.  He is missed.

Typical for larger subsonic jets of that design era, as well. Look at cockpits on legacy 747s, L1011s, DC-10s, etc.

Was in a 707 or DC-8 at JFK waiting in line to takeoff a long time ago back when I was a kid.
An Air France Concorde was ahead of us and was ready to take off. It finally did and it was so loud, I could hear the Concorde's jet engines from inside the plane I was in.

Yeah, I could see that regret. Cockpit seat, or passenger? I am curious at the cockpit view during take off and the nose moving in the up position.

Random fact most of you guys know but some guys won't.

The lines of the plane for supersonic flight made it awful to see out of. That's the why the nose pivots, otherwise it would be really difficult to see the runway.

Passenger, was gonna take off, zip up to some altitude, zoom around and come back down.  I don't even remember if it was going to go supersonic - I think so, but not hit top speed.  Was a stupid amount of money that I didn't really have back in the early 90s and back then I thought "Nah, someday I'll actually take a trip in it".  Wrong was I.

What was the service like? Were you treated differently than flying on a 747? Was there room under the seats for a carry-on? How was the acceleration during take-off, was it noticeable?

Haven't flown:

1) But I got to enter one while it was on the Tarmac at Heathrow
2) And the Brit Air fleet captain gave me a signed certificate stating I flew on one.
