You try any preversions in there, and I'll blow your head off.

Who here used to tape a dime in their shoe for an emergency phone call?

Yes I did, and the booths were wood not metal.

Yes I have used them and closed the door. But Jesus, its been a few decades. Probably since being in schools in the Marine Corps. They were some of the last holdouts I think.

Yes, more times than I can count. Believe it or not back before cell phones you had a pager. When the pager went off you would start looking for a pay phone then pull over and call whoever paged you.

Back in the good old days.

Yeah, lots of times. Phone booths were everywhere.

Used them whenever we could when we were kids.  Always fished through the coin return for any coins, and finding one or two was hitting the jackpot.

Back in the late 80's early 90's, a group of us were four-wheeling in the Mohave desert when we came across this one.  I called my girlfriend from it, and she was wondering how I was calling her when I was out camping.

Of course used it both ways, door open and closed. Honestly didn't use phone booths that much, I just waited til I got home and used house phone
I did use them a lot more once I had a beeper though.
I believe that was before you needed area codes when calling locally.

I've had a cell phone since the late nineties, so before that.

It was inside a hotdog joint in NYC. Go inside the booth, shut the door, push open the other side, and you enter a “speakeasy” called Please Don’t Tell

I have one in my living room.

Wood, chickenwire in the glass, seat in it, rotary dial that hangs up on the side, marked "Insert two nickles or one dime."  Light works (mercury tilt switch).  Phone worked last time I had landline analog service.

There was a bar we used to frequent, and it had a phone booth built into the wall.
It had a seat, and the light came on when the door was closed.
It also had a fan that you could turn on.
I used it a few times to call people.
If I were to use it now, I'd have to wear a fedora, smoke a Chesterfield, and call women 'dames' or 'broads', all while downing a shot of cheap rye whiskey.

Yep. I’m old, though.

Last time was probably early 90’s. Haven’t seen one for a LONG time.

I drive by two daily. This is in an upscale mountain town on a private lake with more well known celebtities than you can shake a stick at.

Yes, closed the door.

I'm 49. I can't recall the last time, but it was probably sometime in the 90s while in HS.

Of course. Both ways, plus the wall ones that have the little bubble box.
Last time? At least a decade or more. Maybe two.

This. I proposed to my ex from one. The old airline terminal at Knoxvillle. I told her we’d get married if I got hired. Should have blown the interview.

The last time was probably the late '90s.
My employer used to make me wear a pager and I'd have to find a payphone and use a company calling card.

Threads like this make me sad.  My knee jerk response is "of course who the fuck hasn't?".  Then I realize there are people alive now who probably haven't.  This is new territory for me.

I'm from South Dakota, and I never saw a phone booth.  I saw payphones on walls (outside and inside).  It didn't matter of it was the middle of January and 40 below, if you really needed to call, you'd get out of your car and use the phone outside the convenience store.

Someone built a house on a nearby lake within the past year.  The garage has a payphone hanging on an outside wall.  Every time I've driven by, I've looked to see if someone is outside there.  I've wanted to ask them why there's a payphone there.  I do know they redid the campgrounds, so that house may be the new caretaker's house.

No, west central MN.  I did see the caretaker about 4 weeks ago, but I forgot to ask him then.

If you're old enough to remember when there were no cell phones you've almost certainly used a phone booth.

51. I may have. I mostly remember pay phones on a wall and maybe a little pod thing around it you could lean into. I do not remember actual pay phone booths. Maybe because I didn't live in a very busy metro area. It was nothing to stop at a store and ask if you could use their phone.

I remember using one of the pay phones, in a booth, at work to order motorcycle parts from out of state. I used my AT&T calling card and punched in the numbers on the phone to pay for the call.  I ordered my parts from the dealer and gave them my CC # over the phone and had the parts on my doorstep in three days.  That's how pre-internet e commerce worked.  I thought that was really slick.
