My favorite Mphs style BBQ is Memphis BBQ company which is located in MS very close to where you are staying. You

must try the pork ribs “dry”. They are fall off the bone tender and the flavor is so good you don’t need sauce.  I took my

family there last week even though I have to drive by several other BBQ places to get there.

Flight, Coastal Fish, Porch and Parlour, Southern Social are all owned by the same people.  We've eaten at them all, and all were excellent.

However, if you want REAL Memphis food, but not BBQ, the best is Pete and Sam's.  Of course, you can still get BBQ, like a BBQ pizza, but everything there is really good, and it's more or less the same "shabby chic" place that it was 50-60 years ago.

My family drives to Memphis about every 4-5 weeks (an hour each way) specifically to eat there.

Edited to add, there was a "locally famous" guy in the BBQ scene in Memphis named John Wills.   He won the World Championship BBQ contest in Memphis a couple of times back in the 80's.

Anyhow, John retired to a little town in Arkansas, and opened a little restaurant there.   His spaghetti sauce closely resembles Pete and Sam's spaghetti sauce.

Last time I was in Pete and Sam's, I mentioned that to one of the owners.  Apparently John Wills and Mr Sam were big buddies, and so Mr Sam's sons weren't surprised at all that John's meat sauce was a close match to theirs, and then they added "You probably outta know that our BBQ taste's a lot like John's as well", which made perfect sense as to why it was so good.

In Southaven?   Try Maria's Cantina,  Memphis BBQ Co.,  Huey's.   Drive down I-55 to the Como Steakhouse.   Windy City Grill for Chicago style deep dish pie.  Tribecca Allie for wood fired pizza.

Memphis, Beale St?   Rendezvous is OK.   I'd choose Rum Boogie or Blues City Cafe.

Memphis, BBQ?   Central BBQ or Germantown Commissary.

Memphis, random?   Try The Beauty Shop in Mid-Town - Former beauty shop to Pricilla.     Try Coletta's - BBQ Pizza the way Elvis liked it.  I wouldn't stop there at night.

Dyer's Burgers on Beale Street is pretty well known, and the burgers are actually not bad. Their schtick is that they've been using the same pan of grease for 100+ years. Obviously, the older grease is burned off and replaced with grease from the newly cooked burgers. It's such a big deal that the pan of grease was given a police escort when they changed locations several years back.

This place is like Tops BBQ.  You can go on Monday and it's the best BBQ you've had and Tuesday you're surprised it's still in business after you break a crown on the char they left in it. Tops is better because they have good burgers, they both regrind their leftovers and serve as "fresh".  The Rendevous is horrible.  When Charlie died, his kids dabble in local politics and the food has suffered.  You can literally buy a small grill, charcoal and a slab of ribs and cook better ribs on a hotel balcony than what you can buy at the Rendevous. Nothing from the Commisarry has impressed me. It's "good enough"... like Tops.

For somebody from out of town that want's good BBQ, Central is it. If you want to have to stay packed and go into some REALLY seedy areas of town, there's better.. but who the fuck wants that?

Uncle Lou's fried chicken is near Millbranch and Winchester. Nobody in their right fucking mind is going there for some chicken.. Even in daylight.

There was a parade through town when the brought some of the grease from downtown to Bartlett.

Fried smash burgers are good. Tops BBQ burgers are better.

The Italian food there is better than Colettas. The new Colettas on Appling tastes like microwaved meals. The old Colettas food is OK, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it unless you want BBQ pizza for lunch, you don't want to be in that part of town after dark.

I have lived in the suburbs of Mphs since the 70’s.  I’ve always thought that the Commissary was over rated.

My favorites are:  Memphis BBQ co., One and Only BBQ and Central or Corkys.

Like they recommended above for a good burger try Hueys or Mugshots.

The problem with finding god food in Memphis proper is you can ride down one street and everything is fine and dandy for about a mile, if you veer off or go further, you're smack dab in the middle of a shithole. I LOVE A&R BBQ, I won't recommend it to somebody that doesn't know Memphis because all their restaurants are in the middle of fucking gangland.

Since you are staying in Southaven, I'll recommend my favorites.  I moved there in 2000 and left in 2021.

Huey's - Near Goodman and Airways - great burgers.  I like the Texas Toast Burger.  It's really just good bar food.

Avellino's - go a couple of blocks east and it's in a strip mall on the right.  My favorite pizza and lasagna - period.

Interstate BBQ - Stateline Road a little west of Airways - get the BBQ spaghetti.  Great sandwiches.

Memphis BBQ - Goodman just west of I55 - world championship winner of Memphis In May

La Hacienda - Goodman one block west past Getwell.  I never learned the name of that road despite the fact I used it multiple times per week.  I like everything on the menu and the staff is great.

Getwell south of Goodman, near the amphitheater, has exploded since I moved. My nephew works at one of the restaurants in that area.  I looked and Central BBQ has a location they.

If you get out to Germantown, go to Leonard's BBQ.  The owners of Gus's Fried Chicken bought them right before they went under.  We went to the new location back in May and Miss Loretta came out from behind the counter to give us a hug.  We hadn't seen her in 4 years.
