The real problem here is that we were sold a bill of goods from our parents and guidance counselors. For me it was the same drum-beat over and over again. Get a college degree and you will guarantee income for your and your family. Unfortunately, I graduated high school when the price of college was inflated, and interest rates were high. Ultimately, I wish I had never gone. But the loan companies aren't the ones who tricked me. Neither is the college. It was my parents and my high school that drilled it into my head that college was not just a necessity, but a guarantee of financial success. View Quote |

The article states that home ownership for young people dropped 9% over a 9 year period, and student loans were responsible for 20% of that drop.
So 0.2% per year decline in young home ownership is worth an article, using data from 5 years ago (the data quoted was from 2005-2014). I guess student loan forgiveness is about to be a renewed push for NPR. Does anyone feel bad for a social worker who borrowed $200,000 dollars? Who is prioritizing a wedding over home ownership? I don't. I also don't feel bad for a indebted school teacher who chooses to make an hour commute. Freedom is scary. |

Kids might as well go into debt getting into Le-V-el or some vacation MLM scam where they get a paper to hang on the wall, student loans and junk college is a huge scam

In high school, I was on the "college track". In my junior year, I decided to take a two-year certificate program in electronics. The school fought my parents tooth and nail to force me to take what THEY wanted me to take, but thank God they backed down from my mom and dad (and probably the SAFEST decision they could have made). That two years of tech training did me more good in college and in life than the college prep crap they wanted me to take.

I know where tuition money is going. Then browse the student body. Take note of the dyed hair, faces full of metal, tattoos all over, obese and that funky aroma of disappointment and bad decisions that can best be described as smelling like syphilis feels... Ahh I don't miss my college days... I kinda do. Mostly don't. I don't miss being removed by campus cops from lecture halls, for mocking a liberal boomer possible hippy that spit on Vietnam vets when they were my age at the time. Before "trolling" was a thing, it was called, Antagonizing. I antagonized many a dyke hair cut boomer woman and fat bald or skinny cardigan/turtle necked sweater wearing 4 eyed point dexter boomer professor. Fucked up part... those courses were required If you ever wondered where Robin Hood economists came from. Go right to your highschool and colleges. If you ever wondered where the degeneracy spawned from? Hippy boomers. Those that can, do. Those that cant, teach. Alot of the fights began with saying to them Your emotions are irrelevant. Tell me what you think not what you feel. And then things got sporty. The best was being called a racist for objecting ACA when that cat herding cunt was all ecstatic over Obama announcing the ACA. that one got me pulled by 2 campus cops. Ahh good times shitting on liberals. They're all about that free speech and protesting until it counters their narrative. Then they become rage filled shrieking screaming toddlers in adult bodies who have been reduced to making fools of themselves while they scream you're some type of phobosisticismist. At least unlike highschool, you can tell those fucks you write their checks and get your schedule/class changed. As for buying houses... Easy solution there... Should have learned trades and how to apply basic highschool geometry with some power tools and buy a fixer upper like I did... Rather than supporting boomers and their asking of 200k for a house that's realistically worth 85-125k but command 200k because the state says that's what it's worth to justify higher property taxes. I went to college and got a degree that was needed for the job I wanted. Graduated in 1997 with minimal debt. I saved as much as I could and paid for the first 1.5 years out of pocket. Worked through school and was lucky to goto school in the town my parents lived in so I didn't have rent. I think a big issue with student loans is how people look at them. I only took out loans for the cost of my classes. Saved up for books each semester. If I would have been forced to move for college I would have split a cheap apartment with roommates. Yes I could have went out of state and racked up 4x the debt but that would put me in a very similar job.

Their loans, their problem. It just drives me nuts that people in the media, that went to college and damn well know better, report on this issue in a way that suggests that there are no alternatives. Military, scholarships, part time jobs, working in the summer, for profit online universities, tuition reimbursement from an employer, or just plain less expensive schools. But nooooo, these poor people had NO choice but to spend $200,000 on college and now the rest of us HAVE to "do something". It's bullshit. View Quote |

Meh. I got student loans. I didn't finish college. I was a water ski instructor at a summer camp, when they wanted to start getting their money. That wasn't happening. I complained about the "crushing debt" of mine too.... because I was lazy, and wanted to be a bum and just do what I wanted to do. Then I started to grow up, got a job, and paid mine off when I was making $40k a year or less (often much less). I just decided I needed to sacrifice, and get it done. Now I realize, even $100k in school loan debt aint a big deal. You don't even need huge income to knock that out in less than 10 years. You just need to make it happen.... and not work in underwater basket weaving. The problem is people won't sacrifice. They still finance nice vehicles, live in nicer apartments, take vacations, eat out.... because the world justifies their actions as "everyone else is doing that"... and that is "normal". I know someone doing this now.... over 40 and still paying off student loans from almost 20 years ago, simple because the minimum payment is how she did her budget all these years. In my field, I see signing bonuses for $120k all the time for kids right out of school. If you are good at software development, you can be pulling home $200k-$350k a year in short order. If you want to be a social worker, plan accordingly. View Quote |

Generic college tuition increase graph https://www.mymoneyblog.com/images/1007/tuition.gif It's fun to hate on young people who make choices as directed by people who are supposed to watch out for their best interests but for 2019 I've taken to directing that hate towards the colleges themselves. I started undergrad in 2003 and by the time I graduated in 2008 my tuition had increased by 58% per credit hour. The modern university is a massive jobs program for the socially/politically connected low-iq peon. Most faculty is converting to "administrators" who do little and are serving as individual cogs in a massive wealth-transfer machine. University of Michigan has several hundred "diversity officers" on staff, most other universities are similar. It's a huge waste of resources. View Quote |

If the average is $40K then about 1/2 of the loans are larger than $40K. I've got a buddy with low six figures in student loans, all from state schools with in-state tuition. My ex-gf graduated with a Masters in Social Work while we were dating.
I had never asked her about her student loan situation. When she got a job in the high-30ks in Tulsa she was awestruck. How can I pay back my loans? I asked her and her friend if they had ever even thought to google starting salaries? Never even crossed their minds. After that they said it wasnt possible, information wasnt there, blah blah blah. I made the mistake of just pulling out the phone and googling it right there, so I wasnt very popular for a bit. That kind of carelessness never even crossed my mind. Didnt last another year and my friend ended up divorcing the other one. They both went off the social justice warrior end so incredibly hard. She even had a job lined up here in Cleveland for nearly double the money but in the ended didnt want it. They both had about $125k each |

I guess the definition of "loan" changed while she was in school. I have zero fucks for these people. I got out of school with $101,000 in school loan debt. I knew loans had to be paid back. Yes, I made stupid choices, and I always sought the maximum loan. But, that is my own fault. I have paid it down to about $20,000.00. It sucked at times, but I have no one to blame but myself. That last sentence is a sentiment totally lost on millennials save for a wise few.

Things are changing rapidly. The cost of college is out there of control but demographics is destiny. There will be massive structural changes in the university market over the next decade and many universities will likely fold. The number of enrollees is projected to fall drastically. Colleges face significant enrollment decline
My son is at a Texas A&M now pursing his engineering degree. The cost of everything is outrageous and A&M is considered an affordable school. The number of Starbucks cafe’s in the buildings and luxury dorms is ridiculous. It won’t last and the smaller, less elite schools will be the first to fold (think small state schools). |
