At breakfast. Ordered a side of them. It came with butter. Do I add anything else?

If cheese grits are properly cooked, all they need are salt and pepper.

Salt and pepper and butter for savory and grape jelly if you want a little sweetness.

View Quote Heart grits cooked down with some half and half to get a creamy consistency and add some butter and salt. cheese can be added if it suits your taste. use less half & half to get the creamy consistency. Oh if you didn't have heart grits to start with its gonna be hard to make them instant grits taste right |

Or go Yankee style and add a splash of maple syrup and a bit of brown sugar. |

More butter and salt. When you think there's enough butter, add a bit more.
Do not add margarine or sugar. Those ingredients will give you Grit Cancer. |

Grits are a lot like rice. Many use them to carry the flavor of something else, but can be enjoyed by themselves, usually with butter and salt, or cheese.

View Quote You can go with 1. salt 2. pepper 3. butter 4. brown sugar 5. and combination of 1, 2 and 3 [1] In one of the lesser known anthropological aspects of modern life in the western hemisphere, is the origin of the introduction of grits as a breakfast item to Argentina and Chile. In 2000/2001, and American expedition was in the small Patagonian town of El Chalten, where one of the expedition members was seen pulling a bag of yellow polenta off the shelf and a box of brown sugar. Being a small town, without much to do, some of the store staffers inquired about the purchase and suggested some marinara sauce for the polenta, but the American told them, that's what the brown sugar was for. The townspeople were aghast, and went on to emphatically explain to these poor, confused Americans how polenta was lunch or dinner item, and definitely not a breakfast item. The townspeople then watched the American cook up the grits on a camp stove, and add the brown sugar. They tired some, and smiled. The American team then went into the mountains of the Fitzroy massif. They emerged from the mountains about a month later, battered, bruised, and dejected from a month's worth of Patagonian storms and avalanches … only to find a number of the townspeople now eating grits for breakfast, and it being added to the menu at the Rio Grande hostel. So, while the expedition failed to summit the Fitzroy, it did succeed in bring American grits as a breakfast item to the far southern end of the South American continent. And now you know the guy who brought grits to South America. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it. |
